Peak oil reality game. Did anyone play it? I'm jealous!

Unread postby Revi » Thu 18 Oct 2007, 21:29:18

I came across this peak oil reality game that was played on the internet in April 2007. Did anyone get to play it? It sounds really neat. It was played for 23 days, and was a complete simulation of how people dealt with an oil shortage. In real life I don't think we'd get it together as well as they did.

I remember reading some of the posts and watching the video's when this was going.

It was a fluff event, It's not the same when you can't afford to get to work or going hungry because groceries have become too expensive.

I see people when a storm rolls through their city begin to fight over bottled water and the event only lasts a few days. I do not have much hope for a happy and huggy transition to a post-oil world.

If our behaviour is anything to go by when times are good, I reckon humanity has a surprise rolled up her sleeeves, cruelty only our medieval forebears were perhaps familiar with.

I followed the game quite closely, but didn't play, being a brit. I tried to drum up a bit of support for it here too, but I don't think the stories involved shooting up the neighbourhood enough to provoke interest. If more people from here had played, they could have injected some grittier reality checks to the project, and affected the storyline.

Despite its fluffy outcome (I think the crisis resolved itself within a year or something) it was an excellent public awareness stunt that made it into the MSM. Its popularity proved that a great deal of the public are (at least partly) on board.

We should ask them if we can initiate our own one and add more realistic elements, like the inevitable zombie hordes, in time for Halloween. It would make their video section a bit more interesting.

We might all get to play the Peak Oil reality game ... possibly sooner than later ... and I don't think it will be much fun.

Mandatory enrolement and with no means of opting out. Unless you one of those with enough money to be living in the middle of the wilderness, off grid and watching the events unfold with a big bag of popcorn.
