Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Farmers are sowing the seeds for an end to the biggest rally in wheat since the Soviet Union cornered the U.S. market in the 1970s.

Growers from Kansas to India are preparing the world's largest wheat crop in 10 years, overwhelming demand and refilling barren grain bins. The cereal has risen 78 percent this year, the most of any farm commodity.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')We're monitoring the commodity environment very, very closely to see if we might have to pass on some additional costs,'' said Kendall Powell, president and chief operating officer at General Mills, where grains represent about 10 percent of its cost of goods.

Only 10%? That's surprising, but perhaps that's in line with the norm.

.

To be sure , to be sure , every northern farmer is putting in a massive crop
it will be interesting to see how the recent oil price increase interact with bumper prices , it should still be excellent .

speaking from a less certain country , the Australian farmers planted a big crop after good rains, for the first time in four years they were going to make money and borrowed accordingly
Now they have their eyes left to cry with , and hardly anything else

If you want to lose money , gambling is the fastest , bad women the nicest and farming the surest

What is a bushel?

Bushels just convert a volumetric measurement into a weight measurement. Each type of grain has its own volume to weight conversion factor.

Grain in turn is bought and sold in large amounts like railcars, barges and shiploads based on weight not volume. Officially, a bushel of wheat weighs 60 lbs. or 27.216 kgs. There are 36.74371 bushels in a metric tonne. But, of course, it depends on the moisture content of the grain.

That is why grain companies measure the moisture content as well as grade the grain coming into their elevators to make sure it is up to specification with, of course, grade discounts for too many weeds or other foreign matter in the grain. Grain that has too much moisture tends to 'heat' in the elevator or during transport. Accordingly it needs to be 'dried', hence a lower price.

bushels to tonnes

PHEBA, As a grain farmer, don't understand your statement about the GOV telling us what to plant and when to plant it??? They don't tell us what to plant OR when to plant it. If they did they could Stick It. I plant what when and how period. And yes I'm "enrolled" with the Gov.

Soybeans are not a "grain" they are a Legume, like Alfalfa/Lentils or Field Peas. Legumes fix their own nitrogen from the atmosphere so they require NO Nitrogen Fertilizer, and studies have proven Phosperous does little to no good on Legumes in terms of yield. .....so it is soybeans that require the least amount of Fert not Wheat.

Grain yields are a result of 2 things, Water and Nutrients. You can grow 100 bushel wheat if you get enough rain and have enough nutrients........... Whether or not you have 1 inch of topsoil or 2 feet is not the issue here. So whoever was "scared" about topsoil well, take a deep breath. Its not the end of the world . Where I farm we have about 3-4 inches of "good" topsoil and the rest below it is Loamy sand. Give us some rain and a little fertilizer and I will grow a good crop.
