You have the right to be tased

Unread postby Novus » Wed 26 Sep 2007, 20:55:26

Just when you thought the taser incident has died down and gone away here comes a new shocker from the files of police brutality.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')rom CNN

Heidi Gill admits she had been drinking at a bar in Warren, Ohio, and gotten into a "disagreement" with a bartender earlier this month. But she said she didn't deserve to have a police officer use a Taser gun on her multiple times.

Video footage from the police cruiser shows Gill, 38, crawling on the ground while the officer stands over her with the stun gun. She's screaming wildly. At one point, officer Rich Kovach shoves her with his foot as she struggles.

Kovach said he used the device on Gill at least seven times, including twice while she was handcuffed, according to the police report.

Kovach acknowledges using the stun gun several more times to try to get her under control. He said once he got her into his cruiser, she kicked out the back window, tried to climb in the front of his car and would not listen to him, the report said.

He used the Taser device again and requested a car with a cage to transport Gill. As he was moving her to the other vehicle, the officer said she tried to run away again, so he used the stun gun one more time. "She fell to the ground," according to the report. "I did see her body hit the pavement and then her head."

Gill said she was in pain throughout the ordeal. "At one point, you can see me crawling on the ground. I was just grasping for grass, rocks, anything that I could just crawl away from him."

Gill said she has had vision and other medical problems as a result of the officer's actions. She said she has nearly three dozen burn marks on her pants as a result of the officer using the Taser gun so many times.

If convicted of drunken disorderly conduct a judge couldn't sentence her to be tased 7 times so what gives the police the right to hand out this type of justice on the street. What ever happened to Habeas Corpus. You have a right to be tased?

EDIT: The poll got messed up there should be more options
- the system
- all of the above
- none of the above/other

Yes these taser are lovely new toys. It seems the police think getting 50,000 volts sent into your body would calm you down. It is proving to be the exact opposite. It seems it may trigger the “flight or flight” reflex into fight. The less aggressive amongst us like OilIsMastery would coil up into the fetal position and weep. But some are going to fight even harder and not realize they are doing it. I believe her when she said:

She said she was trying anything to get away "so I could live."

When I was 20 years old I was over a friend’s house when his girlfriend’s angry ex-boy friend showed up with a few friends to have a “talk” with him. I went out to talk to the guys and they were real agitated but I was calm because I didn’t have anything to do with it. When I didn’t even expect it one of the kids maced me with CS gas [not OC]. I do not remember what happened after that for a short period of time my friends said “I lost my mind”. Punching kicking biting stomping you name it. All I remember is a rage taking me over and when it was over one of my friends helped to the house and they spayed my face down with water. Whatever happened at the end of the street one of the kids had a severely fractured skull and I was being arrested with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon with intent to commit murder and I don’t even know what the weapon was[kicks to the head?].
The point of the story is if those were police officers and I was maced I don’t know if I would have acted any differently. They probably would have shot me considering was 6’5” 250 lbs back then. These weapons actually escalate the situation because you do not know how individuals will act when their body is put under such stress. I say fuck the police. Give a chimp a taser and he’ll use it for anything.

The 50,000 volt pulse is no worse than when you touch a car ignition cable by accident. It really stings, and you shake for a minute or so, but no big deal.

I think its an effective tool for police to gain control of a violent person, or one resisting arrest. But, not to go beyond that, its not up to them to punish one for their actions, just to gain control. I have heard of city police in our area actually punching people out, including broken ribs and black eyes, who they believed were assaulting a fellow officer, so if the tazer avoids that risk, to immobilize one so they do not assault an officer as they they try to resist arrest, it may work out well to the advantage of all.

Some people are just not in control of themselves, particularly if they have been drinking or using drugs.

Ya sure if you touch it for a split second and yank your finger away. How about having barbs shot into your chest and having the volts administered at another person's will? Sign me up. There are some dopes out there that need to be tazed. My point is you give cops these toys they will use them against jaywalkers because all you do is heighten the power trip.

If the cop is at fault in this, it would seem to be from continuing to use a clearly faulty taser. If she's trying to run away, the device clearly isn't working properly. That thing is supposed to knock you flat on your butt.

As for her, she sure looks like an obnoxious rowdy drunk to me. Her and her ambulance chaser lawyer aren't getting much of my sympathy.

The reality is that there are rowdy obnoxious drunks in the world and ya gotta deal with them somehow. Back in the day it was billy clubs and guns. Everybody decided that was too violent. Now we go for tasers and pepper spray. Since they're less lethal, of course they get used more. Someday they will perfect Huxley's Soma guns. Then we will all be in perfect control all the time and nobody will ever get hurt and it we'll all live drugily ever after.

Ya ya smallpox. I used to bounce for a couple of years. I dealt with drunken chicks all the time, no big deal. She didn't have a weapon.

Watch the video. If you don't think this cop isn’t a sadistic fuck is not getting his rocks off on his little power trip wake up. He should have just shot her in the head several times.

I won't disagree with you there, but anytime you get lit and kick the window out of a police cruiser, you can bet it's going to be a bad night.
