Of course, my idea would only run on a very powerful computer, so I'm hoping that western civilization lasts long enough for the hardware allowing me to create the game I was thinking of to be invented.
You do realise, of course, the irony of using a powerful computer to simulate what is effectively the result of what got us to being able to produce said computer, right?
Actually, an interesting fact is that CPU's have gotten alot more energy-efficient in the past couple of years.
The Core 2 series, for example, has around 65W TDP as opposed to that of most Pentium-class CPUs @ substantially over 100W.
They're more powerful to boot. I don't know what they did with them, but I've heard they're bloody good.
Now, if we could do the same for graphics cards, we'd be set...
