Notice that the Newsweek article shows that the number of vertebrate species that are endangered has approximately doubled during the last 10 years or so.

Expect to see a lot more progress being made in the global extermination campaign. Within a few centuries, the rate of extinction will slow when a majority of the animals have been killed off.

Yep, the only thing that is valued is making waste.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('carini', 'W')hat people need to do is to take genetic samples of these animals, cryogenically freeze them and hope that in 1000 years we will have the technology to clone them and bring back what we have killed off. But the problem is no one is gonna pay for that kind of project.

Read about that very idea years ago. I wonder what the bill would be. Or, down the road, for analyzing their genomes.

Why'd this happen? Why did any of you ever buy any "Chinese Crap"? Didn't you realize what you were doing to freshwater dolphins?

You need to read the story a little more closely:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')istorically, the species had been revered and achieved nearly demi-god status among fishermen who recounted tales of dolphins being reincarnations of drowned princesses. But in Mao's Great Leap Forward, the overthrowing of idols saw their protection lifted and they were hunted for food and their skin.

It would be nice to have an international conference of religious leaders to reach an agreement on advocating protection for other forms of life, or sanctifying them, even.

OisM will now chime in with some comments on Communism, I'm certain.

Edit: More of the killings were the result of unsophisticated trawl net fishing. Could've prevented that in the past with advice/tech - perhaps it wasn't done due to sanctions?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')ou know, whatever it is that the Chinese government allows... we sign our names, right on the dotted line, in invisible ink, by buying up all their plastic crap and their disgusting furs and the rest of it.

Hell, there's a good chance we paid to build the factory that makes the crap.

There was no confusion - the USA deliberately offshored its pollution along with its jobs, factories, and safety and health standards.

Its like blaming the illegals you hired when your drinking water gets e. coli. after you told them to dig your latrine hole next to your well.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('coyote', 'T')his is indeed unbelievably sad... and infuriating. It's infuriating that people do what they do, with no thought for other creatures, for humanity, for the future, for the planet. Infuriating that the world has become irrevocably less rich by the actions of a few. And yet, it will happen again and again. The "first large vertebrate forced to extinction by human activity in 50 years"? Let's wait and see what the next 50 years have in store. Who's next? Polar bears? Orangutans? Gray whales? Salmon? How many will go? And what will it have been for? A few dollars more? A few more days of partying?

I get royally pissed off at our government here in the U.S., boy do I, but the things the Chinese government allows -- either with an official sanction or with an unofficial wink -- I also once made a strong effort to buy no products from China. I also failed. It was impossible. You know, whatever it is that the Chinese government allows... we sign our names, right on the dotted line, in invisible ink, by buying up all their plastic crap and their disgusting furs and the rest of it.

Our culture has indeed failed.

Not a very coherent post. Just a lament.

The co-tradgedy is that average Joe and Jill will hear this news, say "oh gee, thats sad, what a pity" then promptly forget it and continue marching onwards to the edge.

Panda is luckier until now.
But days of panda are counted as well. Very few individuals left and genetic deterioration pending due to very small gene pool.

You have to feel bad for all animals, they're paying for our recklessness.

Our bill is in the mail.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lore', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'e')dit: the jerk does have his own blog and has thus created his own reality. all for himself. what an accomplishment.

You know, he's just posting this junk to keep his Sig out there with his blog address.

That's got to be it. I haven't yet seen a single post of his that brings anything of value to this website.

China is currently destroying its entire river system. The Yellow River - the birthplace of Chinese civilization - is now dry in parts for several months each year. Pollution has reached the point where most of the water is undrinkable - yet people continue to drink it because they have no choice. I see China as the canary in the mind for mankind's current way of life. The Death of China's Rivers

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')ts really hard to NOT buy Chinese made crap now... But I try to every chance I get.

Nowadays I never find any labels with 'made in ...' on merchandise, so I have not much choice. This is in Sweden. I think it is some kind of EU regulation. Extraneous information like that supposedly creates unfair competition. Which is just another example of how business ideology rules the world. In any case, the dolphins were not consulted.
