$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WhipperSnapper', 'I') think this is just more Congressional symbolism over substance. If the government really wanted to end mass illegal immigration it could do it.
It could start by jailing employers who knowingly or recklessly hire illegals, then the Constitution could be amended to say that if an infant's parents were here illegaly, birth on the soil does not confer citizenship, ending the anchor baby problem.
I fully agree. All symbol, no substance. It will do nothing to stem the tide, only shift it geographically. It may even worsen the problem since many people will assume the problem has been fixed by this worthless fence, so there's no reason to take any other action. I also have a major problem with the government spending huge mounds of money for useless symbols.
I agree that the way to solve the problem is to seriously crack down on employers (prison time, seizure of assets, etc.) and to amend the Constitution to get rid of the anchor baby provision. We also need to stop all talk of amnesty.
But that won't happen because TPTB don't want to stop the illegals. Hell, they want more of them. Hence useless measures like this fence. Meanwhile, prosecutions of employers have dropped by an order of magnitude since Bush took over, and talk of amnesty continues unabated. And when the Dems take over the House, amnesty will be the one thing both houses and the white house can agree on.
