I keep hearing an ad for gold bugs on the radio which repeatedly reminds listeners that "gold has never been worth zero".
My response, sure it has, if you were a jew in Auschwitz you could have all the gold your arms could carry, and it was worthless for purposes of keeping you or your family alive.
If it won't buy your way out of a gory pointless death then what's it really worth?

On the other hand there are documented cases of people being able to convince the soldier coming to pick them up to "look the other way" with the aid of an ounce or two of gold.
Once you're in the camp you're screwed, but bribery can work when applied at the right time.

Of course during post PO, he may be more convinced with a bribe of a roll or two of toilet paper; considerably more practical.

Value is subjective. There will always be situations where someone doesn't value what virtually everyone else does. Gold hasn't always been worth something, but it has the best track record, as a currency.
The exaggeration you're complaining about is fairly slight. The last civilizations to not greatly value gold were what, some of the Indian tribes that our ancestors wiped out, early on? And they were, of course, far, far behind.
