Value is subjective. There will always be situations where someone doesn't value what virtually everyone else does. Gold hasn't always been worth something, but it has the best track record, as a currency.
The exaggeration you're complaining about is fairly slight. The last civilizations to not greatly value gold were what, some of the Indian tribes that our ancestors wiped out, early on? And they were, of course, far, far behind.
