$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', 'W')hat I'm wondering, about implanting them in patients - why do we need this when we have the electronic health record? With the EHR, all medical staff need to have when a patient enters the hospital system is a name and birth date, and ALL of the patient's medical documentation is available on computer, every lab test, x-ray, history and operative report. Why do we need RFID to treat patients? Even if they're unconscious, they're likely to have a wallet with ID on their person when they're transported to hospital.
Well, for one thing EHR's are facility specific. They generally only have records from the treatment that you get from that hospital. If more than one hospital in an area is owned by a certain corporation, then those hospitals might share their EMR. In theory I guess pretty much anybody could get mugged, get their wallet stolen, get hit over the head and left unconscious on the sidewalk. I can't imagine it being very widely accepted.
