PO.com community

Unread postby Pops » Sat 07 Jul 2007, 17:40:39

We met and talked quite a while with a fellow PO.com member last night. It is really interesting how much of a community we have here.

We gossiped, griped, quoted, jibed and admired many of our fellow members just like small town folks would about neighbors.

We didn’t talk too much about PO as we are doing things in that direction already.

But it seems to me many of us have quite a possessive feeling about this place, how it is run, the message it sends, etc.

Anyone else think along these lines?

I'm pretty sure my husband is sick of me talking about po.com so much, what so-and-so said, the latest debate or screaming fight.

I wish there were more PO-aware folks around here. I think the east Texas PO.com folks are closest to me. Is there anyone out here in Tennessee?

As far as the community is concerned, I feel pretty close to a lot of people here in a hard-to-explain way. It's weird because peoples' icons are how I see them in my mind. Like, Dantes for example... he IS Pierce Brosnan in my mind's eye. SpecOp is Hobbes, Mr. Bill is Waldo, etc. Zardoz is amorphous.

I'd love to have a PO.COM rendezvous at some point.

Well, Pops, I must admit that I have really latched on to PO.com. It has been just over a year since I started posting (2 years that I have been reading), and it is a regular fixture in my life now.

Reading about the insights of other members and staying on top with new information, as well as hearing personal stories, keeps me tuning in, often in the wee hours of the morning after I get in from work. (I absolutely cannot visit while at work - strict rules apply - Sigh!)

Yea, I look at the place pretty much the same way as one of those 'give up smoking/drinking' support groups. Useless in a way, because it's YOUR personal fight, but nice to talk with people that have the same problem.

But... I also keep posting here because I think Peakoil.com is a great place to get people talking about related issues - like Climate Change etc. This web site is a great leveller and also a forum for new debate in lots of areas. 'Nuff said.

Big Group Hug!

I really appreciate the insights I gain from you all. My wife, too, hears lots of, "On peak oil dot com there's a lot of talk about...." types of things. Luckily she's pretty PO aware and receptive to the information I learn (just not as freaked-out about it).

Portland's PO group is nice to have nearby. Their website is good for networking and addressing local issues. Haven't been able to make the meetings cuz that's my usual night with the little ones. I'm too busy training them for the apocolypse anyway. Playmobile dioramas of sustainable agriculture...being attacked by headless playmobil biker zombies : ) Teach the children well.

I'd love to meet other PO.comers in the Portland area.

Yeah, that'd be worth burning a few hydrocarbons for.

Lately I've been delving into the more technical side of energy and when this site started there seemed to be more debate on the future of fission, say. The posts from two years back had a lot of knowledgeable people who seem to have moved on; the recent EV thread has some Newbs who can crunch numbers though, and I hope they keep it up.

Plenty of informative and insightful posts here on Planning and Geopolitics. It's great to see the latest Zardoz avatar. And we can write fuck and shit! Lots of G rated forums out there. Goddamn weenies.

Are your kids up for some profanity, Ian? I can put a lid on it if you want. Also the incessant pipe smoking.

I like PO.com's format and overall personality a lot. But I had expected the traffic and number of posters to be quite a lot higher than it is.

Yup. I have members I enjoy reading, members posts I laugh at. I always enjoy the intense free exchange of ideas, predictions, preparations, suggestions. Similar ideas here make me thing I'm not so crazy. My brother and I talk PO regularly. It is amazing to me how our discussions are always mirrored in the topics here or topics here lead our talks to new places.

What a great place this is :-D

Yes, a pleasant evening of conversation with Shannymara last night almost reassures me that the people one likes on the forums are people one would also like IRL.

If I could just purge the memories of that nightmare weekend of drunkenness and debauchery I spent in Amsterdam with Schweinshaxe last year ...

What other place can you have a conversation with

liberals, conservatives, libertarians, survivalists, neo-nazis, marxists, back-to-the-landers, cornucopians, uber-doomers, environmentalists, sociopaths, farmers, bankers, petroleum geologists and a few really strange folks (Here's to you Raphael!).

I love the no holds barred environment and I feel like this is sometimes the only place to have an honest conversation. So cheers- its been great to meet all of you freaks!

Absolutely. The diversity of voices in this forum is great. Plus, it's a big enough community that there's always someone online monitoring weather underground for the latest potential hurricane threats, prices variations in gas/crude oil, and other insta-doomer-porn.

JDumars, I have some friends who just moved from NYC to Nashville to be near family. They're peak-oil aware, though I'm not sure that they specifically read this site. I'm not really sure that they're more concerned about PO than they are about global warming, but then, it boils down to the same changes in lifestyle, doesn't it? They joined a local CSA in Nashville, and are doing some vegetable gardening for the first time. Very environmentally-conscious folks, which I guess is usually a rarity in TN.

But even the south is changing, isn't it? My group of friends back in Chattanooga are all involved in some kind of green initiative of one sort or another, which would have been completely laughable even a few years ago. If you hook up with a local CSA or food co-op, I'm sure you'd meet quite a few like-minded folks.

Though we do have a few language problems now and again...what's a CSA ? I thought that stood for Confederate States of America :-)

My occasional fantasy is that if the SHTF quite bad I'll bounce all the credit cards and go on a world tour to meet you lot, possibly ending up in New Zealand as it seems the least worst place to try to outlast the perfect storm.

But I guess meeting Virtual You's will have to do for the time being.

Sorry, CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. Basically, a bunch of people get together and buy shares in a local farm. Then the farmer comes into town once a week during harvest season and passes out each family's share of vegetables, flowers, fruits, eggs, whatever it is the farmer produces. So the farmer is assured buyers for his/her entire harvest and the shareholders are ensure locally grown, seasonal and usuallly organic food.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'Y')eah Pops, thanks, it was great to meet you and your wife. I had a wonderful time! :)

Yes Ma’am, we had a great time as well – until it was time to get up and feed the cows!

One of the nicer parts is talking to folks overseas.

Seriously, as thuja said, I have had the opportunity to talk with very intelligent and experienced people here that I have never and would never have had the chance otherwise. Pretty darn cool.

Salute!
