Sometime ago, on some thread I can't even remember, "Jack" prognosticated that the Chinese would keep the US going at least through the Olympics. It made sense to me then and makes sense to me now. If China is an up and rising power, it wants to "showcase" itself next summer as it host the summer Olympics, much like Nazi Germany in 1938? At any rate, it apparently made sense to the experts over at Marketwatch.com, who have borrowed Jack's line of reasoning although not given him proper credit.

Here's the quote:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his might also explain why talk of when a market correction would be desirable for the Chinese authorities is heard. Ideally, any pullback should wait until after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, while this autumn the Communist Party convenes its 17th congress to approve the top leadership changes before the National People's Congress elects a new government in March. A stock market slump would not give the impression of economic buoyancy needed during the sensitive periods of major leadership changes.

Market Watch

Remember, keeping the Chinese system running means keeping the US system running. In this new economic world, "if the machine breaks down, we all break down." So, although it doesn't say "we will keep the US floating until the Olympics, if they don't continue to float themselves, its the same difference.

it's not just the olympics. As long as the Chinese continue to out-grow the rest of the world with regard to financial, manufacturing might, and resource control, then they will not disturb the system.

They are gaining ground rapidly by the day.

The moment that gain stops, expect the chinese to immediately take whatever action that they think will put them on track to greater control over natural resources and financial markets.

Even actions that would seem abominable to the western mind.

If nothing else, the chinese are adept at extreme pragmatism.

China is big, and growing leaps and bounds . . . but they are still small compared to the west in those areas. Even at their current massive growth rates they have a while to go yet before reaching parity.

Thank you for the kind words!

Notice the connection of events - The Olympics in China and the U.S. elections in 2008? Now add some market cycles. Usually, the year of a Presidential election and the year prior are up years. The year after tends to be a down year.

And - I seem to recall that Cheney's financial advisor spoke of the bubble going through 2008?

Now suppose the sub-prime mortgage problems start hitting hard in November of 2007. It takes time to work through the sytem. Along about mid (or late) 2008, those securities start to come unraveled, and the problem has to be addressed by the Fed.

By the way, Seahorse - the parallels with Nazi Germany are strong. China is quite nationalistic, and their military and economic might waxes greater by the day.

Was "Chinese Olympics" Jacks thought?

http://www.peakoil.com/post386558.html#386558

I've been saying that for about 18 months now, and recently someone even pointed me to an article from 2004 which said it. So *I* can't really claim that as my original idea (that's the problem with the internet, everyone has already thought of everything ;) ).

It's going to be very interesting come Aug 2008, I think it would be good to be in a safe place around that time just in case something is triggered by it. I hear Jack is allowing 50 people to stay at his ranch in Texas if you ask him nicely. ;)

I remember there was a major olympic event held in Sarajevo. I think the rest of the world (including china) will also suffer sarajevo's fate after the olympics. There are just too many converging disasters coming to a head around that time.

I expect the SHTF in 2008 worldwide (not just the "3rd world") and TEOTWAWKI by 2012.

The Chinese (Han) are a distinct race, one that really can claim to having invented most things first. Expansionist, nationalistic, they could make the 1940s Germans look like neutered house cats.

No, the western world seems to cope well with those activities.
There are other abominations in store.

I do agree that 2008 includes some cusp events that could turn ugly . . . or they could pass by with little change. Hard to say

Oh - you must mean the China that has been occupied or invaded at one time or another by every major power on earth. And the one that could have - at any time prior to 1500 - invaded and occupied any other country on the planet - yet NEVER did so.

That kind of expansionist and nationalistic.

The larger your empire is from a geography standpoint, the harder it is to maintain. China is expansionist within its own borders, in terms of population, acquired resources, military strength, Chinese finger traps, etc.
