Space: 1999

Unread postby Aaron » Sun 10 Jun 2007, 10:37:02

September the 13th 1999 Lunar base Alpha experiences a cataclysmic accident in it's nuclear waste disposal/storage facility.

After a mysterious new magnetic radiation effect causes the nuclear pile to detonate, the 311 moon base residents find themselves on a tour of the Galaxy as the Moon is hurled from it's orbit around the Earth.

I've been revisiting this old series from my youth recently, & rediscovering what drew me to this show in the first place.

The thing I like most about this show, was how seriously they took themselves. No wise-cracking comic relief like Star Trek... or children's characters like Star Wars... Space 1999 did their show with a straight face.

I had forgotten Commander Koenig's cool office, where he pushed a button and an entire wall slides away to reveal the moon base command center full of hard-working, ethnically diverse crew members with lots of cool gadgets.

Decently written, with commendable acting & set-building, this show was a landmark in my childhood. I had the toy Eagle & everything.

Just like so many of these shows in this era, folks way back when reasoned that oil would not last forever, & man would be forced to turn to some other energy source... like Nukes in this show.

5 Stars - Highly Recommend

They must have had a serious budget for cast as well. That's Pele at the control console.

I also enjoyed this show; sure looks dated now tho' eh?

One thing that always bugged me tho' was the fact that the nuke dump was on the dark side of the moon, so the explosion should have driven it toward Earth rather than away - tho' yes, orbital momentum would likely have carried it past, rather than into the planet. But as I recall that wasn't the way they portrayed it...

I had the lunchbox in grade school.

I remember one very disturbing scene for me as a child when they put a pretty young thing in a chamber and disintegrated her. The screaming was bone chilling.

I agree, that show was ahead of it's time.

I am a Sci-FI junkie. I finished Space 1999 Season One a few months ago. Now I am watching Enterprise which I like better (Jolene Blalock is hotter than Barbara Bain).

I give 1999 Season One 3 out of 5 stars.

Ummm... you assume too much.

What I'd really love to have are the out-takes from the show. Back then out-takes were regularly destroyed though so...

I also might point out that shows like Enterprise benefited from shows like 1999 which preceded them.

1st Alien movie makes em all look amateurish though.

So while we are on the subject... U.F.O. anyone?

OMG look at Martin Landau in space drag!
Wow, thanks for this, Aaron. Right up my alley. Adding it to the Amazon wishlist. Roaring with laughter at the wacka wacka euroguitars!

I am afraid I have to say that I have never even heard of the show. I grew up without a TV and missed a lot, I guess.

Yeah... it's pretty much the ultimate in retro classic TV.

We'll never be naive enough again to produce its like.

Purely without pretense... very 2001ish.

"UFO" was great too!. Those women on the moon base with the purple bob-cuts..."Launch Interceptors!"

What a high energy future they all envisioned.

Col Wilma Deering - oh yeah.

I'ld nail her and then I'ld smask Tweaky to pieces with a lumphammer.

That would be a good 10 seconds.

Check out the Catacombs website. Also check out "All that Glistens" in Season 2 to watch the actors completley loose their cool laughing while performing their script. Catherine Shell once said after making that episode" I know who I screwed to get on this show, who do I have to screw to get off this show".

UFO had great theme music.

Hanoi Jane, bucka bucka!

Thanks for the contact high, Aaron. I can never think of worthwhile things to search YouTube for.

Did buy the Land of the Lost DVD though. Watch out for Sleestaks! Checked Space: 1999 and it was priced a bit dear at the time. Barbara Bain was quite the honey on Mission: Impossible.

Don't remember UFO. Did sit through a Kolchak the Night Stalker marathon recently - good viewing. Rented V too.

This UFO scene blew me away!

Pretty advanced for 1960s television! [smilie=5obsessed.gif]

Youtube can't do the scene complete justice. The origional image resolutoin is needed.
