I collect and shoot military weapons. I have a particular interest in American military weapons from the revolution to the present. Like most, I am only limited by time and money.

wildrose.....thanks. Now I might be tempted to hit that yarn store anyway! :)
You should give knitting another try. I taught myself the basics using a book called Stich and Bitch. Very easy to follow. Can probably pick up a used copy for cheap.
2 of my sisters knit very well and they can help when I run into problems.
Also if you have a yarn store in your area, they usually hold classes. It's quite nice to sit and knit w/ others and discuss the community and what's going on in everyone's life.
The yarn shop here is nice and the workers there tend to be very nice, mostly into wholistic stuff etc. They even have classes I hope to take one day on everything from carding, spinning and using a loom.

That is a great suggestion, Nella. We have a Michaels store nearby and they probably do offer classes. Stitch and Bitch, eh - funny!

No time for hobbies. Too much school and work.

If I get a student position at my current hospital site (fingers crossed), I want to take up Brazilian Jiu-Jujitsu.

Good posts on the "singing for your supper" etc., I agree on the "gotta do it" and "gotta replace the passion for this idiotic site with a passion for something real" impulses.

I may well sign up for a beginning guitar class just because it will be something that I have to show up for, and it leads to more levels of classes...... I agree on people trying to hum "back in black" and complex synth solos in the End Times.... it will be hilarious. Almost nothing you hear on the radio can be hummed or sung or strummed, or would you want to.

Fortunately there's a big folk music movement here, tons of get-togethers, jams, and an amazing place called Gryphon Strings.

I sold some junk at a swapmeet yesterday and the guy next to me brought his stuff on his bike, he was telling me all about how he's renting a room from a Mexican family (it's amazing, no one yells at each other, they're so NICE) and is on disability, but is good on guitar, I said he should try playing a few places with the case out.... he says he played at Hometown Buffet and got like $40 in half an hour, but then management told him to leave. I said That's ok, just keep trying places, some won't like you, some will, and some will at least tolerate you. I think a basic living can be made doing this here.

Remember ultimately, you're a farmer or you're a parasite! But music does make things go more easily.

I like alot of music. including "good simple": songs.
However, I like some classical music as well, and other songs that have complexity to them. I'd hardly say classical music is white noise. I'd hardly call it trash either.
Quess I'm saying I didn't care for your post much, and I don't even like hip hop or rap.
Banging on drum isn't dumb either. I think that's what drummers do?

Very true. The Cutters are demoralizing us every way they can, they've split us up and removed music from us. No better way than to teach us to be rude, and run around singing M***F***r, M'***F***r. This does not build good community relations, and does not teach you the finer art of social interaction. Media is awesomely powerful turn it completely off. Escape this programming for you life. The importance of good simple music cannot be overstated in winning wars, and uplifting spirit, building and sharing emotion and keeping up a positive attitude.

Try and hum JC or snoop dog and you will soon see you look like one of those fools from africa with a spear hopping up and down moving your head like a turkdey (gobble, gobble) Pure hypnosis. They took away our heritage, I advise to you that if you cannot sing it or hum it after hearing it once, you should not be listening to it now, there is no time to learn comples songs. it warps your mind and replaces the few minutes of song learning you could be learning with white noise that cannot be learned, and thereby in effect plugging up the sensory inputs and programming circuits in your brain.

I cannot tell you the importance of turning off the trash. Even one sentance of trash seeds itself and your mind builds and responds to it. I would get older recordings by folk music groups that is good, or ballad singers orII like the old old hymns, they at least have a message you are going to need. Learn them, you will need them. People playing one instrument and singing, this is best, it teaches chords, real rythm.

when your lonely, what you gonna do, pound on a drum? thats retarded.

Beautifully put, Giraffe. thanks

Classical is an outgrowth of European folk music - it had to come from somewhere! Knowing Bach and Handel will be neat, but there were tons of "volkslieder" or folk songs around too. Some of the songs white Americans grew up with go way way back too, like ring around the rosie and things like that.

My Indian neighbors ondoubtedly know some neat folk and kids' songs from their country. Likewise my Viet and so on neighbors.

"Country" music is much more singable because it comes from folk music. Gryphon Strings in this area is such a 'hub' of folk music that someone set on becoming a troubadour could do worse than to, if they're going to be close to homeless anyway, live on the margins here just so they can hang out and learn at Gryphon.

Rap, rock, modern popular music has as much to do with advertising as music. Listeners to the more violent forms are people who tend to grow up in houses where the TV is on 24 hours a day, yes there are really people who live like that. They grow up to the rhythms of ZAP! POW!! Buy our detergent!! Now back to our show!!! BLAM! BLAM! Take that!! CRASH!! etc.

Good one!! You're right, they're harvesters, not farmers. And hunter-gatherers are superior to farmers, that's how we lived until the Fall (the discovery of agriculture).

However, there needs to be some classification of occupations based on usefulness. Sellers of ARM mortgages and SUVs and cellphones, for instance, are examples of occupations that are not only not useful, but actually harmful.

The Japanese had a system with Samurai at the top (because well, they had the swords I guess) then farmers, then artisans, then at the bottom, tradesmen. But US society is almost all tradesmen, and tradesmen are the most esteemed.

Frivolous hobbies? well, tonight for instance I am going to go and video record one of my friends bands playing, then since another friend just got dumped by his g/f I am going to take him out and get him drunk, and pour him into bed at some disgusting hour of the morning.

Two weekends ago I had fun riding in a "super B" about 600 miles. It was cool. I have no idea how much gas we burned but he read off some of his gas receipts and he seems to fill up around every 600 liters.

Then the next day we put on a whole bunch of specialty ordered stainless steel doo-dads on his rig for a truck show coming up this weekend.

As far as music goes, I was trying to point out someone's reasoning is flawed. I hate rap. It's not musically complex at all. The tempo isn't varied, etc. Lacks melody. I don't understand how someone can say simple music is best yet not like rap. If you don't like rap, use a better reason. If you like folk or country or traditional or bluegrass, just say that. More singable makes sense.

And the banging on drums thing was more of the same. Banging a drum might have to be one of the simplest forms of playing music. Certainly less complex than guitar, piano etc. Playing a drum can be similair to hand clapping in keeping a rhythm or tempo. Neither one is stupid and both have a place in music.
.

And to be clear I do like bluegrass, and was raised on folk music. I don't like rap or hip hop at all. That post on music just came off racist.

I used to read quite a lot..could read a small roman of 300 pages in a day when i was younger..too bad i have to read more usefull stuff rather than sci-fi or others frivolous books nowadays :( !

I should learn to play harmonica and maybe something usefull, like canning..

Next planned hobby : Shooting..trying to find old surplus rifles ! I want to get at least a No4mk1 Lee enfield ( .303 caliber ) and a M1 Garand ( 30-06 caliber ) and start reloading to keep it cheap to shoot :)..

Should be fun to learn to shoot with iron sights only  !

The only problem right now is i have to wait for my gouvernment to watch if i'm "okay" to get firearms and issue my license..man,it's been a month and nothing on their system yet :(..

I do not dislike all rap. I grew up with rap and Rapper's Delight was a revelation to us kids - something to work on getting down perfect while waiting at the bus stop. We also used to re-enact comedy routines done by local comics that were on their records. One kid in the neighborhood might have the record, a few kids would listen, then other kids would learn the routines from listening to those kids.

I'm a big fan of Grandmaster Flash and with a little practice should be able to do his "The Message" down pat, ought to do that at an open mic sometime.
