Sustainable Fossil Fuels - Mark Jaccard

Unread postby Veritas » Mon 11 Jun 2007, 11:50:58

Has anyone seen or read this book? Curious about its quality, once I'm done reading what I've got (beyond oil, and twilight in the desert) I may check it out

http://www.emrg.sfu.ca/sustainablefossilfuels/

"More and more people believe we must quickly wean ourselves from fossil fuels – oil, natural gas and coal – to save the planet from environmental catastrophe, wars and economic collapse. Professor Jaccard argues that this view is misguided. We have the technological capability to use fossil fuels without emitting climate-threatening greenhouse gases or other pollutants. The transition from conventional oil and gas to unconventional oil, unconventional gas and coal for producing electricity, hydrogen and cleaner-burning fuels will decrease energy dependence on politically unstable regions. In addition, our vast fossil fuel resources will be the cheapest source of clean energy for the next century and perhaps longer, which is critical for the economic and social development of the world’s poorer countries. By buying time for increasing energy efficiency, developing renewable energy technologies and making nuclear power more attractive, fossil fuels will play a key role in humanity’s quest for a sustainable energy system."

The words 'sustainable' and 'fossil fuels' don't even belong in the same book together, much less the title of one. A finite natural resource cannot suddenly be made infinite, nor, by definition, 'sustainable'.

It sounds like the book is just about how to limit the effects of using fossil fuels (carbon sequestering and other technologies) and to make them last longer while we transition to alternative energy sources. The title is certainly misleading, but given the sensationalism of the title I wanted to see if anyone had read it before I drop the $35 on it to find out its a dud.

I agree with Emerson. The title is ridiculous and thus casts serious doubt on the whole book. There are better candidates for your time and money, Veritas. If you haven't read them, I suggest the Heinberg series for a good grounding.

I have power down and read it once (i find i usually dont catch everything a book has to offer until ive read it 2 or 3 times). Eventually I might get Party's Over but it sounded like there might not be a whole lot in there that isn't contained in other stuff I have here (i.e. david goodstein - out of gas and Kunstler's long emergency)

"The Party's Over" is considerably better than "Powerdown." It's worthwhile reading, almost essential reading for a good peakoiler. Gotta be better than "Sustainable Fossil Fuels," ha ha.

'The Party's Over' by Richard Heinberg is the best single book I have read on peak oil - if you get one book, get that one. I have read maybe 6 books about peak oil and it's consequences and found that each of the others tend to mix everything up together into a hodgepodge of geopolitics, environmental degradation, urban planning, economics, etc. While each made valuable connections between various aspects of the peak oil problem, I think some of the central issues get lost in there...or maybe i just like simple answers like everyone else in the world :)

'The Party's Over' should be required reading.

Ain't no such animal.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') wanted to see if anyone had read it before I drop the $35 on it to find out its a dud.

$35?! Even if you wanted it as an example of what NOT to believe, if you wait a few months, you can get it used from Amazon for MUCH less!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ''')The Party's Over' by Richard Heinberg is the best single book I have read on peak oil

Total agreeance. And I have both TPO and Powerdown. Plus Deffeyes, Darley, Kunstler, and Savinar. (Plus Ruppert's 'Crossing the Rubicon' and Klare's two resource wars books.) You MUST have TPO! You can get it new or used from Amazon's secondhand listings for a very reasonable price. Do that NOW!
