Good man Tommy,

You've made all us guys look like wimps but you're right of course.

A couple of big stones in a circle, some wood and any type of metal lid or grid and hey presto, put your pan on the fire and free cooking.

Now all I need to figure out is how to wipe my arse without causing a rash post peak and I'm set.

Craigs List

Don't be a piker. If your wife wants a grill, get her a grill. Mr. Jefferson will tell you that this sort of thing was popularized in his area.

On a more somber note, you would be shocked, really, at the number of young suburbian people that have never even so much as cooked a hot dog over a fire using a stick. We have had a number of these kids at our place for birthday parties, etc. and we have a custom at a certain point in the evening of starting a roaring blaze out in the back, and doing marshmallows, hotdogs, and these kids, age range from 10 to 20 or so, are completely aghast that we would go out and find a stick off of some tree in nature somewhere, and use it for cooking a hot dog that you would actually eat yourself. Even more shockingly, the males have no more experience at this than some of the more athletic females.

If oilmageddon really happens, they are in trouble. The parents will be just as badly off.

Anybody else do a double take after reading this thread's title as "Wife Wants a Girl"?

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Went to the bank the other day with a friend. There was a display in the bank with a BBQ pit with a chance to win it through a raffle drawing. When I asked the teller (a young man maybe 20) about the raffle and BBQ pit he said in a winey voice " I have never BBQ'ed my Mom and Dad BBQ for me, when I get my own place I will need to learn to BBQ" I just looked at my friend and shook my head.

WTF!
It's a cold cold world when a man has to pawn his shoes.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TommyJefferson', 'F')irst you make a pile of sticks, brush, leaves, or almost any woody plant material.

Next, you set it on fire and let it burn down to coals.

When the apocolypse comes, you can do it too!

In theory, but living in the UK you can bet your sweet that there will be some sort of Carbon Emission tax and some sort of "green" law forbidding this and.......

I know of a kid back in high school that was cooking hotdogs over computer parts (motherboard, etc). I was told the fire was green, i'm guessing alcohol was at play here. Not sure if the kid is still alive.
lawns should be outlawed.

Hibachis rule. That's all we ever used when I was a kid, they're cheap, you use charcoal or briquets, and they work well. I've also cooked on a regular old fire, like you make with sticks. Fire-making is funny, it's like fishing, you get better and better at it over time. It's learned at the "feel" level rather than the "think" level, to a great degree.

Yes you can use any old stick to roast a hot dog or meat on, but don't use poisonous plants like oleander!

Additional thoughts on this subject.
My main objective is to get a grill that is not too large, easy to use and not a pain to refuel. It should be inexpensive so that when I need to junk it because it broke or civilization just collapsed I dont feel like I wasted a bunch of dough on it. Being "green" is an added perk.

Yes I've cooked on an open fire and up to several years ago I would go roughin it camping, including open fire cooking. I even demonstrated the fine art (ha!) of finding a stick and cooking your food or desert on it to a bunch of sixth graders when I still was a elem school teacher. Dont do much of that now cos the missus likes her wilderness a bit tamer like from a cabin or lodge. Sigh.

But between now and apocolypse, whenever it is I plan on doing some more civilized grilling which is why I started this thread.
