Yahoo

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')P PLC's chief executive, John Browne, resigned Tuesday only hours after a judge cleared the way for a newspaper to publish details of his private life.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')e had been fighting since January to suppress details from an interview with a man with whom Browne had had a relationship from being published by the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

"For the past 41 years of my career at BP I have kept my private life separate from my business life. I have always regarded my sexuality as a personal matter, to be kept private," Browne said in a statement.

So he's bailing from a multi-million dollar per year job because he's been publically outed as being gay?

Anyone care to fill me in on what the two have to do with each other?

Nothing, really. I posted this to take advantage of a triple-entendre title.

Also because despite all of the "beyond petroleum" stuff, Lord Browne has been mainly a supply side cheerleader, who thinks that gas prices will go down, etc. per this post from The Oil Drum:

The Oil Drum

and this thread from a year ago.

PO.com

This is the management genius who presided over the pipeline corrosion/meltdown in Alaska last year, and the infamous Texas City refinery explosion that killed a lot of people and shut down one of the biggest refineries in the nation for a period.

So, it is ironic that the board of directors would fire this guy for his after-hours activities, rather than because of the fact that he was doing a crappy job by allowing the place to fall apart.

Maybe it has more to do with his lies to the court to try and prevent the publication of details.

I guess that most directors of BP would have voted him out of office for such an offence, so it was best to go quickly and at least keep some of the massive 'pension' allowance he has got.

Running the company into the ground and shunning safety practices? Naw. Being a queer? You better believe that's unacceptable!

Kind've like how the US gov't and those that back the incumbent administration thinks. It's okay to fuck up in Iraq, mopping up after Katrina and screwing the poor over to help the rich. But start promoting gay rights or evolution and it's a whole different matter.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('IslandCrow', 'M')aybe it has more to do with his lies to the court to try and prevent the publication of details.

*Ding!*

He lied to a court about knowing someone. Whatever his reasons for blurring the connection, a lie to a court is a lie to a court. Especially given his track record of late, I can't imagine any other executive being given any other option.

This story has had me laughing over here in the UK. Not just because of the story, I mean who cares if the dude is gay or not? But more to do with the excessive Gossip journalism behind it and what is considered important. I can't wait to see the look on peoples faces when they realise what they haven't been told about all these years.

Celebrity will be the death of us all.

Now if this had been Karl Rove getting exposed it would be worth it but I kind of feel sorry for the guy after thinking about it for a bit.

Well considering what we know, there's a certain lack of getting things into perspective, but heads in sand etc.
