Save NEOPO! computer problems

Unread postby NEOPO » Sat 28 Apr 2007, 10:49:22

Yep I done went and did it yesterday...

I started removing tons of crap from this machine as I noticed I didnt have 15% free space to defragment.

Apparently, I hit delete on the wrong thing as now I am experiencing the following issues:

Can open but cannot see hotmail - BLANK WHITE SCREEN
Can post here but cannot use any features - BOLD,QUOTES,ITALICS etc etc...
and for the first time since I started using XP, I cannot even get Restore to run...doh!

I have reinstalled the .NET framework, ran a registry clean up tool and defragmented the hard drive yet still no fix.

I think its JAVA related yet when I try to DL and install Java as well as Active X this damn things starts running an installation of MS office 2000!?!?

This computer is my back up as my best computer lost its hardrive a few months back which really really sucked...
Its an HP PAVILION - XP - INTEL 2.0 CPU - 512 RAM.

Any ideas? Helpful free DL diagnostic tool from Cnet or other? please? 8)

I use external harddrives, when my computer starts to do stuff I don't understand I pull out my harddrives and delete everything and reinstall XP and it's like new everytime.

That's my only advice, copy everything you want to save on a external harddrive then empty your computer and install whatever OS you like.

Hope you get it to work again!

Reinstall XP + patches

Nope, this comp is maybe 6 years old at this point plus I dont like talking to people from india named Cindy or Thomas :)

I will try Aarons advice and if that doesnt work beg for more ideas 8)
Thanks everyone.

Quick question - what program makes the text editing in posts to work here at PO.COM?
What allows bold, italics etc etc?
Isnt it Java? or something else?
I think its the same that allowsmy hotmail email to run as it has advanced text editing also.

If you want to try it NEO, I've got a pdf that explains in detail how to do a non-destructive reinstall of XP (a "hidden option" in the installation routine), that will reinstall all of the original system files without the need for reformatting the drive and wiping all your personal data.

Keep in mind that this will not remove any virii that might be present, and you will also need to download and reapply any patches.

Tho' copying your data to another drive and doing a full reinstall is preferable, you might want to try this first, as it takes a LOT less time.

Of course the best option is to wipe everything and install a version of Linux... 8)

Seriously tho', if you want to try it, PM me an email addy that can accept attachments up to at least 1 Meg and I'll send you a copy.

You could do what I did a few years ago when my Dell crashed. I simply put an ad on CraigsList for a free computer, waited 10 minutes, and my problems were gone stuffed in some guys car trunk. Try that idea.

Then you run over to the .mac store and live happily ever after. :)

Its not a virus, its human error, Oh yeah, I guess it is a virus :)

Ok Yes! its not java its javascript! Now where does one find that for free?

When I try to reinstall XP I receive a message "the version of xp on this computer is newer then the version on this disk" and then I cannot choice to continue only cancel/exit. Aint that a bummer? :o

Javascript will fix this problem me thinks yet I cannot find it as a free DL.

If I'm not mistaken, most web browsers include an implementation of the Javascript engine. You might try uninstalling your browser then reinstalling it. Unless of course you're using Internet Explorer; Micro$oft's tight integration of it into the desktop makes that a daunting task...

The pdf I mentioned above should get you around that issue NEO. But you need to let me know soon if you want it because I'm out of here shortly for probably most of the day...

If it fits your circumstances, this approach works well.

1) Copy your important data on to a CD ROM or USB thumb drive. And ask if you particularly need help with saving your e-mail.

2) Boot up on your WindowsXP or HP Pavilion Recovery Disc, and choose to do a complete reinstall (that is, blanking the entire hard disk). Follow instructions to complete the basic reinstallation.

3) Do your various online software installs and updates. Reinstall Office 2000, etc., and your other personal software from your CDs.

4) Copy back the data saved in Step 1 to the hard disk.

...

If you think you can do the above, this is the best thing for making your computer faster and clutter-free.

Also, if you have another good hard disk lying around, consider reinstalling XP on to it instead, thereby leaving your present installation undisturbed - and thus keeping it as the perfect repository for your old data.

Finally, if you're using IE, maybe you can run away from the problem temporarily by just installing a different browser - i.e., from www.firefox.com.

Thanks everyone.

I have it on life support and will hopefully be able to pull my data and reformat but yeah the HP's were always hard to reformat. I cant even see the bios on the hp! Yeah a floppy is mandatory me recalls.

Sorry Twilliams, I was talking but not thinking :)
Its so slow now I am not sure I even want to bother but if so I will pm you and thank you for the offer.

We are "heavy users" so it is surprising the HP made it 5 whole years, thats like 90 years computer age :-D
