How many here would oppose human genetic modifications?

Unread postby Kylon » Sun 22 Apr 2007, 19:46:02

If you could have genetic modifications that would give you the capacity to regenerate (regrow organs and limbs that otherwise don't grow back), synthesize a good number of your own nutrients (from other more general nutrients of course), not age, and digest non-edible plants, would you do it?

I'm thinking yes, and I would in a heart beat.

What about you?

I am willing to submit myself to government experiments that give me superpowers. I don't mind a bite by a radioactive spider or a serum that gives me amazing strength. I have already begun work on my costume for crime fighting. It's pink with purple lightning bolts.

Well, if it made me a shapeshifter or jedi, I'd be totally on for it.

I would have a navy blue/purple light sabre.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Kylon', 'I')f you could have genetic modifications that would give you the capacity to regenerate (regrow organs and limbs that otherwise don't grow back), synthesize a good number of your own nutrients (from other more general nutrients of course), not age, and digest non-edible plants, would you do it?

I guess it depends. If I lost my arms and I could have it to grow my arms back with minimal undesirable side effects, I'd probably consider it. But just as a matter of course, I don't really see what the point would be.
After fueling up their cars, Twyman says they bowed their heads and asked God for cheaper gas. There was no immediate answer, but he says other motorists joined in and the service station owner didn't run them off.

I want wolverines regenerative powers. That way I can out and bet people a million dollars that I can jump off a 50 story building and survive.

Genetic modification is not like simple mechanics, where you flick a switch and the robot does what you do with 100% accuracy.

We'd probably need the whole protein map folded and few decades of human tests (good luck finding guinea pigs for all the genes and protein combinations, mounting up to a few billion) to be able to approach any kind of reliability.

And even after that, most benefits would only be available to newborn babies whose genes where modified at embryo level.

That would rule out most of people here in this forum.

But if you want sci-fi, I can also ask sci-fi:

Would you like to have a portable controlled black hole to store all your items?

How about free energy device that enables you to carry around as much energy as possible, without ever exhausting it?

How about eternal life?

Infinite IQ?

Ability to read minds and tele-kinetically move objects?

Sure, they may not be possible now, or in the next 100 000 years or ever, but one can dream, right?

Who opposes those inventions?

Well other than I don't want people reading my mind, the rest sound cool.

Can I get X-Ray Vision and the elongation power ;)

I'm even coming around to think Barry Bonds is OK.

So what if he used steroids......cheating has always been part of baseball....its literally part of the game. Look at spitballs....pure cheating, but its definitely part of the game.
