In real life meet-up outside the board

Unread postby mmasters » Mon 16 Apr 2007, 12:09:37

I was thinking how many people on the board have ever met up in person. I would guess very few. Anyhow I was thinking the idea it might not be a bad thing for some of us local PO aware thinking types to network in real life or if anything just hit a bar for a few beers.

Any hey, I bet some of these doomers can party!

I'm in NYC and always up for a drink.

I am to friggen scared to meet you all face to face. Knowing the type of crack pots that are on here, I expect someone will show up with a dead body in their car. ;)

Absolutely.

"Real life"? No way. God knows what horror could befall us.

Actually, being from Chicago, I am sure that there are quite a few from this area.
In fact, I was the Meetup.org's second person to host the PeakOil awareness' meetings, and when they decided to charge for things, we decided to stop having group get togethers from that specific organization.
We used to meet at a Caribou coffee house in a trendy neighborhood that the first person who started the group chose. I guess he got bored of his own group. I tried it for several months, we had a few good months, and then as spring rolled around, everyone started doing other things, including myself. (I run garden centers, so it's pretty busy for me until July-August.) In fact, I am probably going to have to go on hiatus here for a bit starting tomorrow, as one of my 2 stores I am running opens up.

I had a yahoo PeakOil Chicago online group, leftover from some of the remnants of the Meetup.org's group who still wanted to stay in touch, but it died down after awhile. I just took it down, in fact, about a week ago.

I think what one needs for sustainabilty with a group is actually being able to DO something. What are we as a group going to do..look for oil in our backyards? It doesn't work out too well..and folks will get together for curiousity's sake, and unless it's combined with permaculture activities, garden walks, something that one can "do", it has no life of it's own. I think the new urban planning groups, the foraging groups, natural herbal medicine groups, those kinds of groups are "doing" something, so they get the attendance.

Pub crawls, that 's good for a bit..but then one has to get on with life. It seems a lot know of it, love to speak on it, but it seems online is where things are at..and that's sad, because I'd like to see a lot more of the good folks here. [smilie=icon_cry.gif] I like a lot of the people on this board.

If anyone in Chicago wants to do a meetup, let me know. I will be busy for the next few months however..Sunday's hubby and I are free..let me know.

If you aren't willing to take a little risk, have a little fun, then what's the point in doing any preparing for the future?

Real life meetup sounds like a big risk, what with the dead bodies we all secretly carry around. Zardoz and cynicalheretic are probably just self-conscious that, compared to everyone else, their dead bodies won't be up to snuff. Oooh, pun.

All we need is for Raphael to be there and explain how the number of people who show up is evenly divisible by 3, which is the magic number, just like 420 is divisible by 3, which is the numerology token for marijuana AND Hitler's birthday, showing that the Swastika is the good luck token for the spirit just like -- and then NEOPO beats Raphael to death.

Go out and celebrate life, eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die. At least we know that some caring lunatic from the message boards will be carrying us around in the trunk of their car.

I went to st louis in 03' to meet up with my online gaming team and we did more partying then gaming.

A regional meet in the Tampa area would mean a 30-minute drive for most involved. While I can appreciate the humorous irony of discussing carbon depletion by excessively depleting carbon getting there, most would see it as foolish.

What is this "real life" you speak of? Is this the meat space I've read about on the Internet? There's life beyond the flickering screen?

Seriously, I have met a few people from another board. Made some nice trades (it's a gun board) and hung out a bit, no serial murderers as far as I know. I'd be happy to have a beer with any locals here in Portland. I've also been wanting to get out on the water more, so if anyone has a kayak or canoe, I'd definitely be up for some paddling, preferably when there aren't any sewer overflows.

Damn, beat me to the punch. Love that term, "meatspace." So icky sounding.

No turds lapping against your dragon boat? What could be more Multnomah County?

Any chance you'll be at the Gun Show this weekend? Might be some film crews! We could show 'em the corpses in our trunks.

Ever bother with the PPO?

Meeting...meating people who only know you from your Forum persona is weird sometimes. It's like you're a circus performer they've been anticipating looking at handbills.

I have met in person:

Rallyman (fell off of the P.O. Radar)
TripleGemini (ditto)
Skatari (Moved to Central Amercia IIRC, have not heard from in a while)
Ayoob (still around)

Several others I have contacted refused to meet with me for whatever reason.

I have been to a San Diego and an Orange County Meetup.com meeting. The San Diego one was a GW Bush bashing session.

The Orange County one was better, but too far for me to drive.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TheDude', 'N')o turds lapping against your dragon boat? What could be more Multnomah County?

I used to walk across the Hawthorne Bridge on a daily basis and saw some nasty stuff coming out of that pipe on the southwest side of the bridge. Yuck.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ny chance you'll be at the Gun Show this weekend? Might be some film crews! We could show 'em the corpses in our trunks.

I'm a card-carrying NRA-lovin' gun nut, but I haven't been to a gun show since the early '90s. So no, I probably won't be at the gun show. I can't afford to buy anything anyway, and since that stupid initiative passed, I can't sell anything either, at least not without hassle. But I haven't been shooting in longer than I'd care to admit, so if you know of any good places and want to play with any of my toys, let's go shooting!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')ver bother with the PPO?

I haven't but I've considered going. Guess I'm not entirely sure what the point is. Mostly I'm just unsocial. But I agree with blukatzen that a group needs to DO something to attract people. I'm not sure what PPO actually does other than show movies and lobby the city council. I'm interested in urban gardening, close-quarters combat, primitive boat building, herbal medicines, woodworking, wild plant foraging, etc. I don't really see this group doing much of that, though I'll admit I don't visit their website very often.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')ilm Screening- The End of Suburbia-
Date: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 @ 7pm- 9pm
Location: Rice Media Center, Rice University, 6100 Main St. , Houston, TX 77006 (Rice Cinema is located on the Rice University campus, inside of Entrance No. 8 University Blvd. at Stockton Dr., 2nd building on the right hand side. )

As part of CLEAN's film series we are screening THE END OF SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream. Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.

It's your big chance to meet the meat behind PO.com.

I'll be giving a short presentation & doing a Q&A.

If possible I'll broadcast the meeting on PeakSpeak.

So you guys will finally find out if I really know what I'm talking about, or if I just Google really fast. :)

If you attend please introduce yourself to me.

I promise not to bite... much.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'B')ut I haven't been shooting in longer than I'd care to admit, so if you know of any good places and want to play with any of my toys, let's go shooting!

I'll keep that in mind. Thuja had that topic about wanting to lock and load, too. I'm pretty rusty myself though, used to plink a bit is all.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')'m not sure what PPO actually does other than show movies and lobby the city council.

They're one of the first hits you get on YouTube for "Peak Oil." Haven't watched it though. I get their emails and mostly, yeah, it's flicks and Randy Leonard. I still think the first order of business is to get far far away from monster metros.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')'m interested in urban gardening, close-quarters combat, primitive boat building, herbal medicines, woodworking, wild plant foraging, etc. I don't really see this group doing much of that, though I'll admit I don't visit their website very often.

I kept tabs on it for a while and it was pretty mundane. I'd still like to attend a meeting and give 'em a good Dooming...or ask 'em what they thought our prognosis as a society was. Lots of chances for "meating" other PO people too, instead of the usual "We've got Tech!" "You should up your intake!" "They'd never do that to us!" speil.
