Way back in the late 1960's, I took Anthropology as an undergrad. It was required to fulfill a Humanities requirement. I don't remember much, but it's probably slogging around somewhere in my memory. But they did talk a lot about religions and taboos.

But a more recent idea is the idea of "Primitive Religion". A "Primitive Religionist" believes that Man's sins bring the wrath of a punishing God. There are many examples of this. Such as:

A. The Old Testament
B. Many environmentalists (Ecotastrophe is the result of man's excesses).
C. Some contrary investors. (ala Bill Bonner and the school of "ought")
D. Many fundamentalist Christian groups. I guess Muslim too, for that matter.

I'm not saying that any of the above is wrong. It's just a way of looking at things, and it may well be right in the long run.

But if you look at the achievements of cultures, what is usually remembered is art, creativity, and ideas. And that stuff is man made, and it is generally positive and optimistic. But this realm also contains a lot of BS and wishfull thinking.

My remark was aimed at the Michael Moore notion that part of the corruption of American Society is the culture of fear promulgated by profit seeking entertainment conglomerates who stoke the fears beyond what is normal. I would argue the conglomerates are giving people what they want and base it on ratings. Fear in society is as old as Death and the unfortunate fore-knowledge of it, and even older really if you think about it.

I can't argue with anything that you are saying Penultimate.

But the PO issue shook a lot of us up! Well, at least it shook me up.

There's more than a few people who think that we are going down the same road as the 1970's. Only this time, they think that it's the 1970's turbocharged. I happen to be one of them.

I remember the 1970's. It started out with muscle cars, and ended up as Green as can be.

So in terms of PO, it's probably rational and prudent to get "Green" and prepare for a bad outcome. In my opinion, anybody who doesn't is asking for big trouble.

But if we get locked into the "primitive religion" paradigm; then we risk the possibility that we may be just plain wrong.

There may be a solution out there that we just don't see; or can't see because of our beliefs. Between solar, wind, coal, nuclear, and conservation; a lot of energy can be generated and saved.

There is also the possibility of new innovation. Although I will be the first to admit that real innovation is a rare thing; it is a possibility. I just hope that if something new happens, it is USA born and bred.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the Dark Ages don't have to happen. The Dark Age mindset can be a self-fufilling prophecy. I think it's important to approach PO with rational concern and worry, but with an urgent sense of necessary innovation.

I'm pinning my hopes on carbon nanofibers. Imagine an SUV that get 200-300 miles per gallon because its made from material ten time stronger that steel and only weighs a tiny fraction of steel. God bless American ingenuity. Hey guest, get yourself a persona and register. :)

Back to the first page here:

Earthquakes and tsunamis are not affected by ecological problems, and are not related to climate change.

In a religious sense, events of this type tend to support the idea of deism: God as prime-mover, not as micro-manager. Work out the implications of that in terms of evolution, and in terms of a benevolent deity.

Anybody remember the movie made from the Steven King novella The Langoliers. They were trapped in a world where all taste had lost its savor. everything seemed 'played out' already. All thought seemed futile. Now what do we have but inane nonsense.
