World Bank to "give" more aid to Africa

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')AIROBI (Reuters) - The World Bank has approved financing worth $164.5 million for Kenya, Burundi and Madagascar for high-speed internet connections, the bank said on Tuesday.

The region is the only place in the world not connected to the global broadband infrastructure, making telephone calls and Internet access very expensive, the bank said.

"Businesses are unable to compete in the global economy, university students suffer because they cannot access the Internet, and government agencies cannot communicate effectively with each other and their citizens because they are not connected," the bank's statement said.

What is interesting is the title of this article.

"Gives" ??? More oppressive, bad debt that will chain these countries to the World Bank and the globalized economy. How much of this sum will end up in the pockets of Cisco, Nortel, Alcatel, and other western corporations, and the civil servants that take the graft from them.

I am curious if Paul Wolfowitz et al are heavily invested in telecom and fiber optic companies. Of course, all these country's leaders will eagerly line up at the World Bank trough and then sell the next generation (whose meager earnings will pay the interest on these loans) down the river.

What ever happened to the Third World Debt Relief extravaganza? They should be writing off existing debt, instead of adding more. I guess this will continue to go on until the World Bank ceases to exist. I wonder what Bono thinks? I guess all these africans need hi-speed internet to buy his songs off iTunes.

Man, this pisses me off.

They "give" (loan) money to the poor countries, then jack up interest, etc then the poor countries end up borrowing just to pay the INTEREST on these loans..... 'Merkans should find this easy to understand, we all experience this with our credit cards.

I didnt see anywhere in your article that the World Bank sent in armies to force the signing of the paperwork.

Suprising to see you wanting to keep the oppressed...well...oppressed.

Personally i think Africa is a fuckin lost cause, but there are some who still want to try and help them.

The World Bank is really just a "Sub-Prime" lender writ large.

The difference here, is that the countries that are shackled to this debt
can't declare bankruptcy. They have tried, what with the "debt relief" crusade, but it pretty much failed. Live-8? Anyone remember that? How long was that in the news for...all of 2 weeks?

Argentina knew the score, and have done everything they can to get the world bank off their backs.

International development banks are quite possibly the most misguided and un-ethical organizations ever devised. I would hope that some of the more enlightened African nations take a page from Argentina's, and find a way to escape the IMF and World Bank's clutches.

Hey did anyone of you read confessions of an economic hitman by John Perkins

http://www.amazon.com/Confessions-Econo ... 1576753018

It gives a very good insight in the workings of these organisations (World bank, IMF).
