Food Shortages Solved

Unread postby RonMN » Fri 30 Mar 2007, 21:10:10

Quote:
miracle fruit, a slightly tart West African berry with a strange property: For about an hour after you eat it, everything sour tastes sweet.

Within minutes of consuming the berries, guests were devouring lime wedges as if they were candy. Straight lemon juice went down like lemonade, and goat cheese tasted as if it was "covered in powdered sugar," said one astonished partygoer. A rich stout beer seemed "like a milkshake," said another.

There are many obscure plants---including many berry-producing plants---out there that have food potential. Let's hope they don't all become extinct before we have a chance to incorporate them into a more rational, more localized food chain.

Among some other "unusuals," I'm growing goumis. They're doing great and are practically effortless to grow---the Japanese beetles barely touch them---and this year I should get my first berries from them.

Anybody ever tasted goumi berries? I can't wait. They're reputed to taste and look a bit like cherries, but I've been disappointed by the inaccuracy of such reports too often to expect anything miraculous.

Hope I won't need RonMN's miracle fruit to unpucker my mouth.

I always wanted to try debian, the mighty king of fruit. I heard the flavor can vary depending on how long the fruit has been left to ripen.

I also want to try growing stevia.

If you ever eat a real Japanese bento, or box lunch, there's a bright yellow pickled daikon (I think) slice or two, if you eat that then drink Coke, the Coke tastes extra-sweet. Also, it's not crunchy, it's "crunky", try it and see. And they make fun of the Japanese on engrish.com for their coming up with the word "crunky".

Stevia ...... interesting stuff, but has an aftertaste like a dog's butt! Yeah, I know, how do I know what a dog's butt tastes like? Well, try to stevia and you'll find you know too..... :P
