Malaria-resistant mosquito developed

Unread postby Ayame » Tue 20 Mar 2007, 16:08:17

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ASHINGTON — Researchers have developed a malaria-resistant mosquito, a step that might one day help block the spread of an illness that has claimed millions of lives around the world. When they fed on malaria-infected mice, the resistant mosquitoes had a higher survival rate than non-resistant ones, meaning they could eventually replace the ones that can carry the disease, according to a report in Tuesday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
...
According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 700,000 to 2.7 million people die of malaria each year, 75% of them African children.
article

......and quite soon there are an extra 2.7 million mouths to feed each year.

Will humans never learn that trying to circumvent mother nature's population control measures is just futile? Mother nature will just turn to her other henchmen: war and famine.

Or am I just a sociopath like Jack?

You forgot to make this a poll. Maybe Jack could Modify it for you. If he's not a true sociopath.

This is insane , good chance that down the road we'll be reading about how some of the mutant skeeters that were MORE dangerous had somehow escaped and all of us need to be vaccinated for malaria. They shouldn't be playing around with that crap / "some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best of intentions"- some guy in some movie I can't remember.

Especially if it was made possible by a generous grant from Halliburton or General Dynamics. Scientists should not try to play God by hybriding Defense Contrator DNA to insects to make a more efficient mosquito.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

I would be more enthusiastic about this if the modified skeeters injected their prey with an effective contraceptive that suppressed both male and female (human) reproduction.

Now *that* would be a wonderful thing.
