Stars & Stripes on Ramadi

Stars & Stripes $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')tars and Stripes is a daily newspaper published for the U.S. military, DoD civilians, contractors, and their families. Unique among the many military publications, Stars and Stripes operates as a First Amendment newspaper, free of control and censorship. We have published continuously in Europe since 1942, where readers currently number around 80,000. We serve about 60,000 readers in the Pacific, where we have published a daily paper since 1945.
Interesting article detailing recent events in Ramadi.
It seems Al-Qaeda angered the tribes there when they assassinated a local sheik and withheld the body for days, thus preventing the prompt 24 hour burial requirements of local custom. That, and a variety of tactical changes have had much success according to the article. I ran across this while reading Iraqi blogs. Other developments: many families have been returning to their homes, there seems to be an overall abatement of violence, despite the car bombing reported over the weekend. It may be too soon to tell, but one Iraqi blogger reports that the streets and sidewalks in Baghdad are being refurbished and trees are being planted lending further to a sense of hoped-for return to normalcy. The "surge" has only just started, so we'll just have to wait and see.

A lot of interesting Iraq blogs to visit: this one for instance has some observations about a kidnapping of a Sunni mistaken for a Shiite in the Jan 29th entry:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he reason he found his presence to be of no benefit in Iraq is because when he caught a glimpse of these kidnappers, they turned to be just kids.

I don't want to be misled or fooled by propaganda anymore than others. It's a tricky business to wade through the information and try to see what's really happening. The role of the very young in these events is a somber one. Gives me pause to consider what happens when the oil production finally does dip below requirements.
