graduate employment dilemmas

Unread postby Chocky » Tue 06 Feb 2007, 08:38:20

Anyone here ever signed an employment contract, then turned down the offer before actually commencing work?

I signed a contract after not getting my preferred position, then a few weeks before I was due to start the first company calls me up and tells me another position has become available.

What do you do?

You're going to have to give more information, not really sure what you are talking about.

First and foremost have you excepted any pay or benefits from the second company.

2) is the 2nd company a direct competitor with the 1st company.

3) Have you actually started work for the second company?

If you can answer no all of those questions and you really want the first job, then tell the 2nd company to go to hell and do as you please. If you can't answer no, speak with the 2nd company about ending your contract as other offers have presented themselves that you wish to pursue. If they will let you out of your contract that's great. If not you may wish to see and attorney.

I've done similar to a corporation. Shook hands and agreed to work, filled out HR documents, but didn't sign final contract. Went to another job interview at a small firm, shook hands on it, making it a done-deal. I then called HR lady at the corporation, and reneged before any money was exchanged. She was shocked, nobody had ever turned down the chance to work for them. I'm sure they hired one of the other candidates who had interviewed.

The whole thing felt gross, but it was the best for everybody.

I was offered a position with Company B in August, after Company A turned me down. Signed contract with Company B, to start work in March.

Company A calls me up and says there is now another position available. The two companies aren't in competition with each other.

You can't be in two places at once. So just find out as much as you can about both positions and choose the one that sounds more your style.
