Do you have a lousy boss?

Unread postby threadbear » Wed 03 Jan 2007, 17:45:16

I found this interesting, and feel so lucky I was self employed when working. I'm afraid if a boss treated me in a really underhanded way, I'd just punch them in the mouth. It wouldn't look good on a resume, but don't think I'd be able to restrain myself. Tell us your worst boss story--Have to get a fix on just how bad it can be.

From NBC.

And now, a Florida State University study says nearly two of five bosses don't keep their word and more than a fourth bad-mouth those they supervise to co-workers.

And those all-too-common poor managers create plenty of problems for companies as well, leading to poor morale, less production and higher turnover.

The researchers found employees stuck in an abusive relationship experience more exhaustion, job tension, nervousness, depressed moods and mistrust.

back in the 80s I had a boss in a plastics extrusion plant that liked to get the workers mad. I saw some guy get so hopping mad once he started hyperventilating. A Vietnamese guy wanted to kick his ass, saying "I'm not afraid of you" even though he must have been 70 pounds lighter. I usually just kept cool but one time he did manage to piss me off. I noticed that he got a kick out of it, sort of a 'gotcha!' thing.

Okay ;-)

Tech job - huge company - 60k+ serious benefits etc etc blah.

Hired on and maybe a year later a new boss came on the scene.
A "genius" some said and after getting to know him I agree yes he was very intelligent and then one day.....

"Today I am going to train you on "something" - let's drive in my company car and go to the place where we do this "something" and I will walk you through it"
"In a few months I will schedule a class for your certification"

We received high level training and a cert for just about everything the company required or else we could refuse to do the work.
So I was pegged as the next "smart dumbass" who would be willing to do the work without the training for now and then later on would receive my training.......heheh

This mofo drives to his house saying he has a computer and a speaker phone in his home office and that we could do some preliminary testing remotely.
We get inside and he turns to me and says "do you get high?".
Doh! I am thinking "do I look like a stoner??" and "everyone else always thinks I am a cop! wtf?" ;-)

I reply " uhm yes I smoke da reefer sometimes" and he looks at me kinda dissapointed and says "No...... DO YOU GET HIGH?" I replied with a half smile "what are you talking about exactly?" and he proceeds to break out a crack pipe and one of the biggest piles of coke I have ever seen.
"No do you smoke base?"
Freebase, crack, cocaine - its all the same to me.
I declined - it was cool - he fired up right in front of me - he then proceeded to "train" me in that "something" (kinda technical and revealing) and nothing much ever became of it besides the let down I felt knowing that my new supervisor was a crack head.
I never went to that class, never received my certification even though I proceeded to do the work flawlessly for the next year or so.
Just one small example - been so many places and worked for so many high level exec types I could write several books on the subject.

If he was only a pot head I bet I would have my damn certificate!!! ;-)
I like certificates - they look pretty on the wall and impressive in job interviews hah

On my applications where it says Positioned Desired I put "Is the boss position filled?" and on the part that says Desired Pay I put the symbol for infinity

Here's another article I remembered reading. Seems logical.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')There are certainly more people in the business world who would score high in the psychopathic dimension than in the general population. You'll find them in any organization where, by the nature of one's position, you have power and control over other people and the opportunity to get something."

HELL YESSS [smilie=new_cussing.gif] !!! This is exactly ,word for word ,my S.O.B. boss..

And if it wasn't enough !

Man..being more organized and far smarter than the boss and his good-for-nothing manager in a small company can really be a pain in the ass sometimes ! If you do a better job than anyone, they are not happy to have a good worker..no...they are so freaking jealous and afraid of being outmached (and this is so obvious that you wonder if they are dumper than a ton of bricks) that they keep trying to control and bitch me at all cost even after a year of being in charge of the production without ever asking for any advices  !!

Oh well..new year..new job [smilie=icon_scratch.gif] !?

By the way..about the psychopath thing..i think that my boss is a liar who is a moron and the manager is the sociopath (of psychopath if you want) who can't pass a day without making a shitty day out of a nice one for everyone under his orders....so,yes..wow..greeeeat team..now,it's no wonder that this company will close the door in the next fews years ..

There is always some justice in this world i guess :P !

I thought you were going to talk about how he propositioned you at his home or something, you ruined it with the "sandpile of crack". ;)

In one of my tech jobs my boss left some revealing personal (sexual) photos of himself and his "toys" on a computer I use. I sure hope it was due to poor management rather than him loving me....

I still have them in case I want to blackmail him. Anyone else have blackmail worthy material on their (ex) bosses ?

Actually I forgot to mention in one of them you could see he was looking at gay porn.. not sure if he was gay or not (apparently Hugh Hefner looks at gay porn too whilst fucking the 7 sluts), but... it was quite odd to see.. that.

When I was 19, I worked at a tree nursery and garden center for about six months, from March til September. My boss wasn't mean or underhanded, but he was a lousy businessman.

About three days into the job, he took me (a complete newbie) to his stock of trees on the nursery property and instructed me to put price tags on the trees, after giving me a very brief introduction to the various types of trees for sale and their ages. I picked up the tags and a marker, guessed at prices for all of these trees and actually learned a valuable lesson - whatever you're trying to sell, the right price is exactly whatever people are willing to pay!

This boss, it turned out, owed all kinds of people money and my coworkers and I had to literally chase him down every two weeks for our paycheques. The place closed at the end of September and did not appear the next season, at least not with the same name or in the same location.

I really enjoyed the work, but the pay was lousy.

lousy boss? ive never worked that corporate shit. my bosses hate it when i dont show up for work. yes i work construction, i have never been fired and i will never be fired. my bosses just pray that i will show up for work.

the job im working now, i took a three week vacation without telling them. just showed up for work one afternooon cause i needed a paycheck--- i got a 2 dollar raise.

i proceedeed to work for 2 days and took another vacation. he came up to my place and said if i showed up more frequently he would make it worth my while.

fuck it. i will not show an effort showing up for work untill i feel like it or untill that 5 acres shows its face. i will not conform to the consumeristic lifestyle.

i have a goal in life. it is to never be fired and make my own rules doing it.

otherwise yes. i have had a lousy boss. lazy, taking advantage of there position. they prayed that i would show up. it made them look better when i did.

yes most pros make better money than what i do.... but i will do without that material bullshit and it sets me free.

Like Specop, I like my boss. In the past I've had bosses I wasn't fond of, some of whom had anger management problems. My greatest complaint is owners of small businesses, who have no idea how to run business.

My wife's employer, and all previous employers in her field, can't figure out which projects and clients are profitable because they have no idea how much it costs to do the work that they do, or what they should be charging for it. They only look at the monthly balance, not at their actual operations. They're doing tons of work, have high cash flow, and are loosing money. They're laying people off, paying for overtime work, and later hiring back the same people they laid-off. They're only competent in their core business, which is not accounting. Eventually they'll go bankrupt like the last place. That means no real job security for no good reason, and that pisses me off.

United Airlines isn't much better.

I don't have a boss anymore, but I have some nice stories.

I worked for a company back in 99' It was a small ISP that also did web development work. I got hired to head up the web development aspects as a salaried employee and the first few months went by without a hitch and then he started asking me to work more hours and stay over to do more work. I did this and it got to the point after a few more months that I would come in at 8 am and work till 10 pm 6 days a week. Then all of a sudden the checks he was writing me started to bounce and I noticed this when a check I written out from my account bounced. I went and asked for cash and he took care of it. Next week samething... this continued for about 2 months and then he just stopped paying me. I also found out he wasn't paying his bandwidth provider as well. Apparently my boss had a big gambling problem. Then company shut down about 9 months after I started.

2003 I started work for a printing company and this boss was the typical I want to be your friend type, but right off the bat was expecting me to work 70-80 hours a week just like he did. He was paying well so I did as he wanted. Next thing I know he started shorting my check and paying me less each time until I would confront him about. He would just play dumb and claimed it must have been the mistake from the accounting department. This happened alot. The last time was about 2 weeks before christmas and I recieved a check for 2 weeks work at 60.00 He had already left to his families up and chicago so there was no way to get my check taken care of. So I quit, and sent an email to everyone on the staff what he was doing to me. (Later it was found out the he had been pulling this same shit on everyone) I then contacted the department of labor and informed them that he was hiring illegal aliens. Last thing I knew all 16 of employees had quit the first week of 2004 and he had to close up shop.

My last job I was working as a dealer at a river boat. My boss (male) kept flirting with me and touching my ass. I was fired from there by him for not being a team player.

I feel your pain cynicalheretic..

Got the same shit myself when i was a lot younger..the boss was trying to lift a company while bullshitting his staff (now, try to guess the age of the staff) and a lot pf people around..talking about nice jobs and good money soon..

I left after 3 days after listening the owner of the local convenience store talking to me about the boss trying to receive some fax without paying a pennie..she was a good honest women,so i listened his advice : get the fuck out !

So i wasted 3 fuckings days of my life working for nothing for a old fart..yay  ! Since that day,i decided to never listen to someone who seem to not be able to fund my paycheck  ..

EDIT : Always a good thing to have something dirty about the bosses in your pocket, can be usefull !
