Who dies when the world catches the flu?

81 million? That's not much of a die-off... :P
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ABC News', 'T')hese days, diseases such as the flu can travel globally in a very short period of time. And now researchers at the Harvard Initiative for Global Health at Harvard University predict that as many as 81 million people in the world could die in one year if a very contagious form of the flu spread in modern times.

Add a zero.
Happy?
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

I wouldn't say "happy".

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Raphael', 'I') just cannot see us helping the poor in ways that are truly beneficial to them in the long run, do you?

I share your pessimism, Raphael.

You also have to remember, that figure is only the deaths directly resulting from the flu. It doesn't account for things like:

-Orphans who's flu-stricken parents are dead
-Secondary diseases attributed to all of the extra corpses laying around
-Deaths from economic upheaval

There's all kinds of ways to die because of the flu, and most of them never find their way into these "studies".
The whole of human history is a refutation by experiment of the concept of "moral world order". - Friedrich Nietzsche

While they may want and demand that first world countries take care of the third I don't see it as possible.

All of us remember the Tamiflu stockpiling, which translates to - stock piling something that didn't necessarily work for the flu encountered, - that stockpiled medicines have expiry dates that may pass before they do any good or can even be used and - that there aren't the facilities to make enough for even 1/2 of the current population of first world countries let alone the whole planet.

Pie in the sky hopes that will never do any good.

Poor people are not being helped much currently; there's certainly no reason to assume a flu pandemic will somehow magically make the rest of the world want to help the poor.
