Movie: "Children of Men"

Children of men Hope it's as good as advertised. Even if the infertility angle isn't plausible (perhaps it is) I'll merely imagine the subsequent anarchy as a by-product of post peak oil.

Look at the vehicles in the few sequences, they are spewing what looks to be the weird exhaust of some very dirty fuel. Maybe home grown biofuels?

Interesting looking doomer porn and a plausible Peak looking scenario.

I have been waiting for this movie for almost a year. Global infertility is a different kind of doomer flick [smilie=eusa_think.gif]

Looks good.

Saw the preview during battlestar galactica, checked out the entire site. Best doomer highlight: a fake commercial for a suicide cocktail.

I like the poll's inference : faced with 20+ years of infertility and hence die-off, allow die-off to continue or seek to investigate/dissect/persue constant spawning of babies?

I'm in my depth of sorrows these few days, and such previews actually bring joy. Definitely d00mer pr0n.

Doomer Porn - Children of Men

Unread postby JustinFrankl » Fri 29 Dec 2006, 00:54:59

Children of Men (imdb yahoo rotten-tomatoes) is a wild, dark ride set in 2027 England. The world has fallen to pieces. A wave of human infertility has lasted nearly two decades, but a young woman becomes pregnant and must reach a sanctuary.

Michael Caine, great story, believable characters, unbelievable action sequences, outstanding doomer porn.

Almost perfect premise. I say almost because the infertility bit- I've read a few reviews- is almost toally unlikely.

It makes me think that this is the "Peak Oil" movie that should have been made, but wasn't. Instead there is this fertility theme...

We shall see.... 8)

If not for the hardcore doomer porn fetish, then for the cinematography which is supposed to be top-notch. It should be good even if it doesn't depict the end of the world very good.

Didn't like this movie at all despite some good "doomer porn". Some of the action scenes were done well too. Just no real substance behind this one... 4/10

That's too bad about the action factor. On the flip side some of the best doomer porn like Farenheiht 411, Andromeda Strain, Colussus:The Forbin Project, the original THX 1138, Gattica, Code 46, or Until the End of the World makes for tedious but compeling doomer porn. Pole-would you say this movie falls in that group?

Anyone else here waiting with baited breath for for The Sarah Conner Chronicles?

The real doomer porn: all out battle between the haves and have nots, globally. Criminal gangs metastasize and follow the pattern emerging in Iraq to challenge state power: 4th Generation Warfare. Electric grids demolished, governments unable to cope, chaos emerges everywhere from nowhere in particular. It's already starting in Brazil, Nigeria, Iraq, Thailand. The overcrowding gets beyond control, populations go collectively insane. The young generation in the middle east goes nuts and attacks oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Cities everywhere lose police protection because of overwhelming unrest. Rats in a cage. that's doomer porn!

That's great! Now if we could only bottle it and forward it Universal Studios Theme Park. Only then could we educate the masses through the medium of theme park roller-coasters.

Michael Brownstein's, World on Fire is excellent doomer porn in literature. If you feel like curling up and reading a book that will liberally employ the word mother fucker along with stoking your blood pressure to the point of spontaneous combustion then this is for you:

Code 46 and Gattica are better "films" I think than this one, more enjoyable. Wouldn't say they are more doomerish or not though. I think 28 days is probably one of the best doomer porn movies you can get. And a lot of the zombie movies too. Terminator series would rank pretty highly also... say top 20.

I can't believe so many people rate this film (Children of men) so highly... it's like we were watching 2 different films.

I'll agree with you on 28 Days, as good or maybe better doomer porn movie than CoM. What got me about this movie is about how random and violent things would happen, and peoples' reactions were believable. For a while, it was almost like watching a live feed of battle, where the plot almost dissolved and survival was the only goal.

But I can see how some people wouldn't like it. For me, Gattacca was, eh, alright.

Children of Men

Unread postby Rishabh87 » Tue 23 Jan 2007, 08:35:43

Fantastic film, great directing, great acting, great cinematography, works on many levels. Loved the amazing background details and subtleties. They expected the viewers to be eventually

MINOR SPOILERS

Even though the plot is about human infertility, for those of you who have seen it, couldn't you just see our future looking like it is pictured in the film. Neo-fascism, regular 'terrorist' attacks, immigrant deportation, grassroots revolution, suicide kits, and ridiculous surveillance and restrictions on the movement of people.

MORE SUBSTANTIAL SPOILERS

I really loved the scene where Theo visits his super wealthy friend and gets chauffeured in a luxury car. As the car drives into the gated enclave, we see what we can assume to be rich people listening to a band in a garden, visiting zoos, and the best part was an Arab with his camel (looked like a wealthy sheik).despite the fact that all immigrants were being rounded up. If you are wealthy in this version of London, you can still live your opulent lifestyle.

Anyway, highly recommended.

Thanks for the critique. I've heard the movie get high praise from others, but was unsure what it was about. It's not a movie best viewed at the theatre is it? Would it be just as good on video?
