Web 'fuelling crisis in politics'

Unread postby mattduke » Sat 02 Dec 2006, 02:44:34

"Tony Blair's outgoing chief strategy adviser fears the internet could be fuelling a "crisis" in the relationship between politicians and voters."

"We have a citizenry which can be caricatured as being increasingly unwilling to be governed but not yet capable of self-government," Mr Taylor told the audience.

Fortunately we still have politicians to help us!

Yah, the crisis is that they can no longer BS us like they used too.

Increasing as people realize big media is in bed with the politicians, it becomes harder and harder to manipulate the common man.

I mean, if the common man can easily communicate with other common men without fear of group think and censorship, and if information can be dissemenated in mass media, then people might actually start thinking for themselves!

There goes the ponzi-scheme...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he end of deference, the rapid pace of social change and growing diversity were all good things, he argued, but they also meant governments found it increasingly difficult to govern.

increasingly difficult to govern?

I wonder if this is what he was talking about:

Sharia law is spreading as authority wanes in UK

The diversity chickens have come home to roost. I wonder how long till a UK citizen ends up in one of these sharia courts? They don't take kindly to infidels.
But how the world turns. One day, cock of the walk. Next, a feather duster.

Yes, it should be frightening for politicians, for voters to have access to both information and ideas.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', ' ')In fact I correspoonded with a pastor from Washington State who suggested to me that my e-mails were probably being watched. Why? I am a vocal and unapologetic critic of a system that thinks of people like merchandise. It works now because most people don't realize they are merchandise, or so many are willing to acept it while times are plentiful. In five years this will have changed and then my friends unless sites like this work for the government they won't work at all. Noone will post a message contrary to the powers that be unless it is not in code.

Yeah, some countries have strict censorship of the internet already. I hope we wont be joining them, but with our rights going out the window regularly it seems we could be heading in that direction.

I dont think they care about the internet because there is so much dis-information out there, people dont know what to believe. Confusion works for them. Plus, they hire spin doctors to twist things around and confuse people even more. Like the abiotic and tar sands bs.

This seems like a theme that is frighteningly gaining steam; the destruction of free speech.

salamander gingrich recently said that free speech needs to be 'reexamined'...

Maybe someone should follow his advice, and permanently keep him from speaking...

Switserland is pretty much governed by referenda, not a bad option IMO...
