Emptiness

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Tue 07 Dec 2004, 13:17:21

Searching for words, hunting for
phrases, when will it end?
Esteeming knowledge and gathering
information only maddens the spirit.
Just entrust yourself to your own
nature, empty and illuminating—
Beyond this, I have nothing to teach.

Re: Jurassic Park

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Rincewind', '[')b] "The planet isn't in jeopardy. We are in jeopardy. We haven't got the power to destroy the planet -- or to save it. But we might have the power to save ourselves."

Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park -the Book)
But did you see his article in Parade this Sunday? (Comes in many Sunday newspapers, including the Oregonian, where I read it.)

Crichton has a puff "feel good" piece where he "debunks" a number of fears we have, including resource depletion, global warming, etc.

It almost made me go and burn all of his books that I have.

SELECT * FROM Quotes WHERE Quote LIKE 'energy': (interesting subset)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('C. S. Lewis', 'T')hat is the key to history. Terrific energy is expended -- civilizations are built up -- excellent institutions devised; but each time something goes wrong. Some fatal flaw always brings the selfish and cruel people to the top, and then it all slides back into misery and ruin. In fact, the machine conks. It seems to start up all right and runs a few yards, and then it breaks down.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Stuart Chase', 'N')atural resources and inanimate energy... are increasingly regarded as affected with a public interest... Certainly they were left by God or geology to mankind and not to the Standard Oil Company of California. If this is not sound moral doctrine, I do not know what is.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Dave Barry', 'F')irst you decide which direction your hot tub should face for maximum solar energy. After much trial and error, I have found that the best direction for a hot tub to face is up.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Will Rodgers', 'I') see where we are starting to pay some attention to our neighbors to the south. We could never understand why Mexico wasn’t just crazy about us; for we have always had their good will, and oil and minerals, at heart.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Everett Dirksen', 'T')he oilcan is mightier than the sword.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('New York Times, Jan. 20, 1981', 'A') dentist may decree that oil production increase, and a goose may command that the Great Wall leap into the air.

SELECT * FROM Quotes WHERE Quote LIKE 'power'

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Wendell Trogdon', 'A')n American is a person who demonstrates against a new power plant, then goes home and flips on all the lights, turns up the air conditioner, puts a tape in the stereo, opens the refrigerator door, plugs in the coffee maker and sits down to see if the television cameras caught him protesting.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('George Bernard Shaw', 'C')apitalism has destroyed our belief in any effective power but that of self interest backed by force.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Seneca', 'I')t is to the interest of the commonwealth of mankind that there should be someone who is unconquered, someone against whom fortune has no power.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Bertrand Russell', 'M')en who allow their love of power to give them a distorted view of the world are to be found in every asylum: one man will think he is the governer of the Bank of England, another will think he is the king, and yet another will think he is God.

Highly similar delusions, if expressed by educated men in obscure language, lead to professorships of philosophy, and if expressed by emotional men in eloquent language, lead to dictatorships.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Michael McClary', 'I')rrigation of the land with seawater desalinated by fusion power is ancient. It’s called 'rain.'

Here is one of the quotes that I think has the best fit to peak oil;

Anon, a Cree prophecy: "After the last tree has been cut down; after the last river has been poisoned; after the last fish has been caught, only then will you find that money cannot be eaten."

Other quotes that I belive apply to peak oil;

Joseph Stalin: "One death is a tragedy, but a million deaths are merely a statistic."

Anon: "There is no anger, jealousy, hatred, suspicion. There is only fear and its various derivatives"

William Sloane Coffin: senior minister, Riverside Church, NYC: "In life you can either follow your fears or be led by your values, by your passions"

Pope John Paul II: "An effective proclamation of the Gospel in contemporary Western society will need to confront directly the widespread spirit of agnosticism and relativism which has cast doubt on reason's ability to know the truth, which alone satisfies the human heart's restless quest for meaning."

Newt Gingrich, Ex-speaker of the House: "The idea that congressmen would be tainted by accepting money from private industry or private sources is essentially a socialist argument."

Golda Meir: "There will be peace in the Middle East only when the Arabs love their children more than they hate Israel."

Twice Born

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Fri 10 Dec 2004, 18:08:29

A human being must be born twice.
Once from his mother and again from
his own body and his own existence.
The body is like an egg and the essence
of man must become a bird in that egg
through the warmth of love, and then he
must go beyond his body and fly in the
eternal world of the soul.

Universe Upset?

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Fri 17 Dec 2004, 19:54:26

Do you imagine the universe
is agitated?
Go into the desert at night and
look out at the stars.
This practice should answer
the question.

Unstable

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Wed 05 Jan 2005, 19:50:28

Eliminate something superfluous
from your life.
Break a habit.
Do something that makes you feel
insecure.
Carry out an action with complete
attention and intensity, as if it
were your last.
