That's for sure. Amateur survivalists won't last more than a few months. The whole "retreat to the woods" idea is a joke. Almost none of those who advocate it have any idea of how difficult it would be to survive.

That's why the global population was essentially static right up until the Industrial Revolution. It was so hard to stay alive the population was automatically held in check.

OMG! Totally. I spent the whole morning at Bed Bath & Beyond coming up a design motif for this camp. I'm off to Ikea now...

Yeah could just be "a camp" with no bug out or bug in factor to it. I still have a few more chances to try and find the elusive Columbia Blacktail. So when I'm out there I'll have to check in on the camp and see what sort of progress there is or loot that I can pillage.

Actually the part he photographed is just a trap. If TSHTF, my plan is to let hapless visitors get caught up in their photography, and then kill them and eat them. The square dug out hole is to throw the bones. :twisted:

As gego suggested, I would start by bugging-in, where, as Ludi suggested, I have lots of dry beans and rice sitting around. When that is gone, the fact that I view things such as insects and dandelions as potential food and medicine, while my suburban neighbors view them as pests and weeds, should go a ways toward keeping me from starving.

In other words, prepare for possible shortages by storing some food and educating yourself on the fact that there is a great deal to eat in the world besides Twinkies and Big Macs. Study some of Ludi's links. I have found them enlightening.


Woohoo ! Another open minded one ..Go down the food chain and you have plenty of food :lol: !

In fact,you can even farm insects..hell,you can find most of the usual eated insects at your local petshop 8O !

I think that Turtle have found the way to go..eating things that most people don't think it's food :wink:..

I wonder how many would actually be able to carry out the "bug-in" plan. Peolple with kids, etc. They're going to feed the kids bugs and worms? As enlightened as the turtle clan may be or others, it's going to take for a tight clan indeed to see this out if it means eating cockroaches.

His biggest handicap as a farmer was that he had daughters instead of sons. When Laura married Almanzo Wilder they were much more successful. Almanzo was a great farmer.

One thing, why wouldn't you want to kill the bears and cougars and roast them on a spit under the prairie sky, dappled with flickering stars? sing the songs of the bears in praise as you eat them, it beats bugs and worms and is good for self-esteem. Humans feel shitty when they have to eat bugs.

I think a few areas in the US could support life at a 'bug out camp', for a limited time anyway.

The Appalachians have a lot of food and critters (mmm lots of bugs) and water available. Thats why folks were/are able to live there in 'abject poverty'. Even without money, the area can support life via hunting and gathering.

That said, I'll be 'bugging in', not out. I'm gonna have as much fun as I can in the big city with the electric lights as long as I have work that pays well enough to live here.

Most definately, bro! Keep and eye out and get some venison. Lots of them in those thickets It seems. Not many industrial sportsman going to go into thick forests. Different out here. They like to drive right up to the potholes and shoot. Plow away the sage. Rather disgusting. But huge racks out here.

I think that your bugout place should be some place not too far from where you are living now, where you can have a garden, some stored food and live in a simpler manner if need be. It's always good to be prepared. Like the idea of a bugout bag. You might never need it, but you'll be very glad to have it if you end up having to leave the place you are living in.

It was a joke, PMS. :P In the event of empty grocery stores, the Turtle Tribe will not really take a 1500 + mile journey in search of smallpoxgirl. So there will be no singing of drunken turtle tunes on the plains of Montana or in the forests of Montana. I am sorry to disappoint you. :razz:

Rest assured, however, if the grocery stores are one day empty, then mammals will join insects in the turtle tribe stewpot. And if a bear just happens to waltz into my garden, it will be one of those mammals.

FWIW, I have lived among two different cultures for whom eating insects was as natural as eating French fries is to an American. And I know lots of people here in the US who view insects as a valid source of protein.
