It's a very fitting tribute, PMS.

I played it for my 17 year old son and he found it hypnotic and was very enthusiastic. My 25 year old daughter thought it sounded like Halloween music, horror flick stuff. It is meant to convey the most horrific conceivable event. Vaporization, radiation. chaos, horror. The true Peak Oil Theme Song, IMO.

Hey PMS, good music isn't dead, it's just underground! All of us avant garde crazy musicians are waiting for the fall of the empire, so we can dance on its grave!

Check out my avant garde peak oil album: Songs from Oil City

I have lots of other music here.

Pendrecki is awesome, as is Xenakis, Cage, Stockhausen, Bartok, Schoenberg and all those cats. If you download SoulSeek, you'll see thousands of us out there, sharing our rare, out-of-print music.

part of the challenge was making a completely acoustic album. Although I did one piece for Olivier Messiaen in homage to Louange a l'eternite de Jesus, from Quartet for the End of Time. That was the one he wrote in the Nazi concentration camp. There are all sorts of things in this album that are apocalyptic...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'P')enderecki wrote "Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima". Listen to it and your flesh will crawl.

The Threnody is one of the finest postmodern pieces out there. I studied it for a bit back in music school. If you want something just as moving, just as modern, but maybe not quite so hair raising, you might try the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs by Gorecki. Haunting and beautiful.
Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive...

Happy Music: Misleading Kids

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Wed 25 Oct 2006, 20:59:34

I put my kids off my trail here when I got banned for two weeks. I encourage my kids to dream and be happy. My boy (he has three sisters) wants to write scores for movies. He's studying classical music. He's writing, with the aid of fantastic new computer programs, his own music. His older sister offers constructive criticism, as do I. It's too cheerful I'm telling him, you need to twist the notes. The sister tells him about conflicting musical themes. What is the right course? I concluded that to harp on doom would not help, for a lot of reasons. What are you doing Jato? What do you tell your beloved children? I'm very happy that my boy is 17 and he wants my opinion. He wants more, he wants my approval which is odd because that's almost all I've ever given him. I can't give all the details, but I can say that he has learned to love being onstage. He did Jagger's "Paint It Black" for his high school talent show. The kids said, "damn you were sinister!" He's anything but sinister, but he loves to show off. I told all of them about the oil problems, but I simply can't dwell on it.

As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine
I was passing by yon cool crystal fountain
Someone hit me from behind

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Through this weary world of woe
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
No one on earth would ever know

They say prayer has the power to heal
So pray for me, mother
In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell
I am a-tryin' to love my neighbor and do good unto others
But oh, mother, things ain't going well

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
I'll burn that bridge before you can cross
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
There'll be no mercy for you once you've lost

Now I'm all worn down by weeping
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry
If I catch my opponents ever sleeping
I'll just slaughter 'em where they lie

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Through the world mysterious and vague
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' through the cities of the plague.

Well, the whole world is filled with speculation
The whole wide world which people say is round
They will tear your mind away from contemplation
They will jump on your misfortune when you're down

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Eatin' hog eyed grease in a hog eyed town.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Some day you'll be glad to have me around.

They will crush you with wealth and power
Every waking moment you could crack
I'll make the most of one last extra hour
I'll revenge my father's death then I'll step back

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Hand me down my walkin' cane.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Got to get you out of my miserable brain.

All my loyal and my much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that's been long abandoned
Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
My mule is sick, my horse is blind.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Thinkin' 'bout that gal I left behind.

Well, it's bright in the heavens and the wheels are flyin'
Fame and honor never seem to fade
The fire gone out but the light is never dyin'
Who says I can't get heavenly aid?

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Carryin' a dead man's shield
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' with a toothache in my heel

The sufferin' is unending
Every nook and cranny has its tears
I'm not playing, I'm not pretending
I'm not nursin' any superfluous fears

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Walkin' ever since the other night.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' 'til I'm clean out of sight.

As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, a hot summer lawn
Excuse me, ma'am, I beg your pardon
There's no one here, the gardener is gone

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Up the road, around the bend.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
In the last outback at the world's end.

I'd say if your son can perform "Paint it Black" and the reaction from the audience was that he was "sinister", and given that your son likes to write more cheerful stuff, that probably a little bit of the actor in him was showing through. Acting has a place in musical performances, especially if there is a certain mood you're going for.

I don't think writing cheerful stuff is necessarily the wrong thing for him to do, if that's what he likes. Have you listened to most of the rap artists that have almost a monopoly on the radio waves these days? Very angry, depressing lyrics and delivery. Maybe a little more upbeat music would be very successful about now!

I struggle with the situation of our world today and what that means for my kids all the time. It seems that I'm constantly weighing practicality (how can I prepare them) with allowing them to dream. I'm basically a person who likes to look for the good and the beauty every day, and I'm hoping I can instill this in my kids while at the same time outfitting them for hard times.

He needs some Ani in his life 8)

Too many amazing songs to list, but here's a random one:

Fuel

They were digging a new foudation in Manhattan
And they discovered a slave cemetary there
May their souls rest easy
Now that lynching is frowned upon
And we've moved on to the electric chair
And I wonder who's gonna be president, tweedle dum or tweedle dummer?
And who's gonna have the big blockbuster box office this summer?
How about we put up a wall between houses and the highway
And you can go your way, and I can go my may

Except all the radios agree with all the tvs
And all the magazines agree with all the radios
And I keep hearing that same damn song everywhere I go
Maybe I should put a bucket over my head
And a marshmallow in each ear
And stumble around for
Another dumb-numb waiting for another hit song to appear

People used to make records
As in a record of an event
The event of people playing music in a room
Now everything is cross-marketing
Its about sunglasses and shoes
Or guns and drugs
You choose
We got it rehashed
We got it half-assed
We're digging up all the graves
And we're spitting on the past
And you can choose between the colors
Of the lipstick on the whores
Cause we know the difference between
The font of 20% more
And the font of teriakiyi
You tell me
How does it... make you feel?

You tell me
What's ... real?
And they say that alcoholics are always alcoholics
Even when they're as dry as my lips for years
Even when they're stranded on a small desert island
With no place within 2,000 miles to buy beer
And I wonder
Is he different?
Is he different?
Has he changed? what's he about?..
Or is he just a liar with nothing to lie about?

Am I headed for the same brick wall
Is there anything I can do about
Anything at all?
Except go back to that corner in Manhattan
And dig deeper, dig deeper this time
Down beneath the impossible pain of our history
Beneath unknown bones
Beneath the bedrock of the mystery
Beneath the sewage systems and the PATH train
Beneath the cobblestones and the water mains
Beneath the traffic of friendships and street deals
Beneath the screeching of kamikaze cab wheels
Beneath everything I can think of to think about
Beneath it all, beneath all get out
Beneath the good and the kind and the stupid and the cruel
There's a fire just waiting for fuel

yes of course. he is an actor. He even took lessons from Robert Duvall on acting a few years back over by the Old Globe, San Diego's Shakespearean venue. So when he acts "sinister" to sing "Paint It Black" it's because he's a stage kid. Wants to be a star. He knows all about peakoil, btw. All my kids know about it because I gave them all the whole story. I just have to let it go though. How many years until problems happen and how bad will they be? nobody really knows. In the meantime, there living to do. btw, WildRose, thanks for the advise, I thought you were right when I read that. If cheerful music is his thing, then that's cool. Even Dylan likes to write cheerful stuff (in 3/4 time with mellow slide guitar):

Beyond The Horizon by Bob Dylan
Beyond the horizon, behind the sun
At the end of the rainbow life has only begun
In the long hours of twilight 'neath the stardust above
Beyond the horizon it is easy to love

I'm touched with desire
What don't I do?
Through flame and through fire
I'll build my world around you

Beyond the horizon, in the Springtime or Fall
Love waits forever, for one and for all

Beyond the horizon, across the divide
'Round about midnight, we'll be on the same side
Down in the valley the water runs cold
Beyond the horizon someone prayed for your soul

My wretched heart is pounding
I felt an angel's kiss
My memories are drowning
In mortal bliss

Beyond the horizon, at the end of the game
Every step that you take, I'm walking the same

Beyond the horizon, the night winds blow
The theme of a melody from many moons ago
The bells of St. Mary, how sweetly they chime
Beyond the horizon I found you just in time

It's dark and it's dreary
I've been pleading in vain
I'm wounded, I'm weary
My repentance is plain

Beyond the horizon o'r the treacherous sea
I still can't believe that you have set aside your love for me

Beyond the horizon, 'neath crimson skies
In the soft light of morning I'll follow you with my eyes
Through countries and kingdoms and temples of stone
Beyond the horizon right down to the bone

It's the right time of the season
Somebody there always cared
There's always a reason
Why someone's life has been spared

Beyond the horizon, the sky is so blue
I've got more than a lifetime to live lovin' you

Words and music by Bob Dylan
Copyright 2006 Special Rider Music

Dylan is an anachronism. He likes words and poetry. My boy isn't too good with words, like most of his generation. I try to encourage him to take an interest in poetry. We went to the Dylan concert and I told him how Dylan's real name is Zimmerman but he took the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' first name as his stage name. Obviously a brilliant move by the young jew from Minnesota. Kids nowadays are not in tune with the poetic aspects of language. A flair for language is a shield, a blessing, a weapon, a revelation. Any aspiring artist should seek to know the power of words and their placement for effect on the mind.

PMS,

"Beyond the Horizon" - what a beautiful song! Poetic and romantic.

I'm not very familiar with Bob Dylan's music - I think he was just a teeny-tiny bit before my musical awakening, which happened right around 1972 or so. Oh, but I did know a lot of the Beatles and a few other British groups, which was what I heard a lot of in Europe.

Your son sounds like quite an accomplished young man - you must be very proud of him.

yes I am. He and his sisters have redeemed me. I was something of a screw up in my youth. But I held on for dear life and put my soul into raising kids. They have repayed me and brought joy to me. I shudder to think what my life would have been like without them. As for Dylan, he is a master of sweet love songs. That's what he does with more conviction than anything else. If you have access to music downloads and can check out all the music of the past, pm me and I'll tell you his best romantic and sweet loving stuff. btw, the Beatles were pretty good at a love song or two, too.

I was a little lost for a while in my younger years, too. And, like you, my kids mean the world to me. I guess there's always hope, even when we screw up a bit, huh?

Yeah, I'm always open to discovering artists - new and old. My sons are introducing me to new music all the time, and my daughter (age 20) has been digging up older stuff on her own. Her boyfriend is quite an accomplished guitar player, and the three of us have had some fun playing Beatles songs and singing three-part harmony. It's a great stress-buster.

I was listening to a Christian Music station this afternoon. Very hypnotic and quite interesting. It used to be the San Diego country music station. You can't go wrong finding out about Bob Dylan. He is better than ever. "aint talkin' just walkin" is very fine, from his newest album. Go back and listen to him sing "Mr. Tambourine Man" in his youth. He's an American treasure.

There are various versions of that song. The one from from the studio is the one to hear. Mysterious and grand. It's the one that grabbed my son's imagination. Something about the blend of his voice and the sweet guitar playing the melancholy melody behind him. It is a folk legend.
