$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', 'I')'d say if your son can perform "Paint it Black" and the reaction from the audience was that he was "sinister", and given that your son likes to write more cheerful stuff, that probably a little bit of the actor in him was showing through. Acting has a place in musical performances, especially if there is a certain mood you're going for.
yes of course. he is an actor. He even took lessons from Robert Duvall on acting a few years back over by the Old Globe, San Diego's Shakespearean venue. So when he acts "sinister" to sing "Paint It Black" it's because he's a stage kid. Wants to be a star. He knows all about peakoil, btw. All my kids know about it because I gave them all the whole story. I just have to let it go though. How many years until problems happen and how bad will they be? nobody really knows. In the meantime, there living to do. btw, WildRose, thanks for the advise, I thought you were right when I read that. If cheerful music is his thing, then that's cool. Even Dylan likes to write cheerful stuff (in 3/4 time with mellow slide guitar):
Beyond The Horizon by Bob Dylan
Beyond the horizon, behind the sun
At the end of the rainbow life has only begun
In the long hours of twilight 'neath the stardust above
Beyond the horizon it is easy to love
I'm touched with desire
What don't I do?
Through flame and through fire
I'll build my world around you
Beyond the horizon, in the Springtime or Fall
Love waits forever, for one and for all
Beyond the horizon, across the divide
'Round about midnight, we'll be on the same side
Down in the valley the water runs cold
Beyond the horizon someone prayed for your soul
My wretched heart is pounding
I felt an angel's kiss
My memories are drowning
In mortal bliss
Beyond the horizon, at the end of the game
Every step that you take, I'm walking the same
Beyond the horizon, the night winds blow
The theme of a melody from many moons ago
The bells of St. Mary, how sweetly they chime
Beyond the horizon I found you just in time
It's dark and it's dreary
I've been pleading in vain
I'm wounded, I'm weary
My repentance is plain
Beyond the horizon o'r the treacherous sea
I still can't believe that you have set aside your love for me
Beyond the horizon, 'neath crimson skies
In the soft light of morning I'll follow you with my eyes
Through countries and kingdoms and temples of stone
Beyond the horizon right down to the bone
It's the right time of the season
Somebody there always cared
There's always a reason
Why someone's life has been spared
Beyond the horizon, the sky is so blue
I've got more than a lifetime to live lovin' you
Words and music by Bob Dylan

Dylan is an anachronism. He likes words and poetry. My boy isn't too good with words, like most of his generation. I try to encourage him to take an interest in poetry. We went to the Dylan concert and I told him how Dylan's real name is Zimmerman but he took the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' first name as his stage name. Obviously a brilliant move by the young jew from Minnesota. Kids nowadays are not in tune with the poetic aspects of language. A flair for language is a shield, a blessing, a weapon, a revelation. Any aspiring artist should seek to know the power of words and their placement for effect on the mind.
