I believe he is a mouth piece for the right.

This crap is presented as comedy yet I find it impossible to laugh.
It is a distraction from reality at best.

A lot of people seem to take him serously. I'll bet he was truly amazed by how the whole oxycontin thing went down. He was reputed to have said to the house maid that was scoring the stuff for him that if it ever got out how he was chasing the dragon of opiate addiction then he would be completely ruined. So it happened and yet he's fine, no problem, all is forgiven. The show goes on, ratings better than ever. Go figure.

Yeah, but he wasn't. That's the whole point. He thought that, but he was amazed to discover that he was wrong. He's got that whole schtick going and it still works. He can have a complete revelation come out in public that he's full of shit and it doesn't matter. That's why he jokes about getting his viagra from the Clinton Library. He's had an epiphany.

Um, lost you there.

He wasn't addicted?
He wasn't doomed?
He wasn't ruined?

From what I've heard, and I'm not a real frequent radio listener, his addiction seemed real enough, of course he wasn't truly doomed he just didn't know it, and why should he be ruined, we don't demand any other celibrety return all their wealth, and banish them from the screen forever simply because they get caught doing recreational pain meds.

You're losing me here, yes he was addicted. But he still has his highly rated show. He's still raking in the dough. So obviously he was not ruined. That's what he thought would happen. But it didn't. Am I missing something here?

Limbaugh vs Olbermann

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sun 22 Oct 2006, 11:47:29

I never heard of Olbermann until a few days ago, but now I see a bunch of fans here linking youtube broadcasts of his MSNBC show so now I have. His ratings are climbing, but from a tiny base. Limbaugh's probably got 20-30 times the audience, but give it time. But here's the thing, I've seen comments here about how the Democrats and the Republicans don't have much difference between them. I've made similar comments myself before. So how come when Limbaugh talks about "rugged individualism" and attacks Liberals and Democrats, and then when Olbermann attacks the right and Bush, so many millions of people say, "Yeah! you tell it dude! The Truth!" and seem to think they know very well which side they are on. They can spot the other side from a mile off and hate them instinctively. If there is such a clear-cut us/them thing going on with these media guys/gals how come the political parties seem so similar? Is it because of the squishy middle? The parties want the squishy middle vote? Are these "sides" that Limbaugh and Olbermann represent real or imagined? I get the impression that the Limbaugh/Olbermann "side" phenomenon is for a subset of the public that uses the Rep/Dem schism as a post to hang their hats on, but that it's superficial and the real splits are between various interest groups such as Corporate/Unions/Public Employee/lobbies of various stripes/Environmentalists/Energy Sector/farming/Media Conglomerates/Religious etc. and the Media Pundit Left/Right thing is just a goofy sideshow.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'A')re these "sides" that Limbaugh and Olbermann represent real or imagined?

I think you need to first draw a distinction between "idealogical" differences, and "functional" differences. Functionally, both parties are identical. They are both for sale to the highest bidder. For the Republicans, it's the corporations and the wealthy. For the Democrats, it's the special interest groups and the wealthy. Neither party actually works for the benefit of the country, though that's what they both sell.

Idealogically, however, the differences are real, but they are also severely inflated. Those differences have always been present, but they never used to be tools of hatred. As hard as it might be to remember, Republicans and Democrats used to be able to work alongside eachother, despite their idealogical differences.

But now that the "uniter" is on the job, every little difference of opinion has become a rallying flag around which the idealogues muster their ire and whip their followers into a partisan froth. As the anger and resentment increases, moderate voices in both camps get disgusted and turn away, leaving an increasngly extremist party behind. The point is well illustrated in this statement:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he right moved so far right they left me left.

Our idealogical differences have been used as wedges to seperate the common people from eachother. This alone is everyone's greatest threat to freedom. A divided population is easier to control than a united one, and the people are certainly divided.

In closing, I'll leave you with the words of Willie Lynch:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Willie Lynch in 1712', 'G')entlemen, I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First, I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the Colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. Your invitation reached me on my modest plantation in the West Indies where I have experimented with some of the newest and still the oldest methods of control of sl aves. Ancient Rome would envy us if my program were implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious King, whose version of the Bible we cherish. I saw enough to know that your problem is not unique. While Rome used cord s of woods as crosses for standing human bodies along its highways in great numbers you are here using the tree and the rope on occasion.

I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree a couple of miles back. You are not only losing a valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed. Gentlemen, you know what your problems are: I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems, I am here to introduce you to a method of solving t hem. In my bag here, I have a fool proof method for controlling your Black slaves. I guarantee everyone of you that if installed correctly it will control the slaves for at least 300 hundred years. My method is simple. Any member of your family or your oversee r can use it.

I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves: and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little list of differences, and think about them. On top of my list is "Age", but it is there only because it starts with an "A": the second is "Color" or shade, there is intelligence, size, sex, size of plantations, status on plantation, attitude of owners, whether the slave live in the valley, on hill, East, West, North, South, have fine hair, coarse hair, or is tall or short. Now that you have a list of differences. I shall give you an ou tline of action-but before that I shall assure you that distrust is stronger than trust and envy is stronger than adulation, respect, or admiration.

The Black slave after receiving this indoctrination shall carry on and will become self re-fueling and self generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands. Don't forget you must pitch the old Black male vs. the young Black male, and the young Black male against the old Black male. You must use the dark skin slaves vs. the light skin slaves and the light skin slaves vs. the dark skin slaves. You must use the female vs. the male, and the male vs. the female. You must also have your white servants and overseers distrust all Blacks, but it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us. They must love, respect and trust only us. Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control. Use them. Have your wives and children use them, never miss an opportunity. If used intensely for one year, the slaves themselves will remain perpetually distrustful. Thank you, gentlemen.

I do get your point, dt, and agree. But just a note: this is obviously not early 18th century prose. So I went looking for info. It's evidently a famous quote that popped up in the 90's. It's got anachronisms as wikipedia points out, but beyond that, it just doesn't read at all like someone would speak or write in 1712, not in the least. Yet there millions of people who assume it to be real. Interesting how easy it is to perpetrate a fraud on the public these days. I'm not faulting you, I agree with your sentiments.

Those guys back then wrote in a style very different from our own. You really feel the passage of the centuries. For one thing, they tended to write very ornate and syntactically complex, using many qualifying ideas; often moving in tangents with references to the Bible such that one feels compelled to return, to recollect the sense thereof which lead to the aforesaid tangential confusings of the the 21st century mind, with all of it's literary barreness and wasting of the fine, glorious gift of the Lord, to wit, the inestimable gift of language! Praise the Lord and pass the ammo!

Oh, it's even better than that. In the ~5 years or so since I first came across the citation, it's been completely discredited. Turns out you were right on target.

Of course, divide and rule is still 100% viable and in full effect, which is probably why this "speech" has resonated so well.

Yeah the policy is the same among both parties. The differences are mostly on these tangent issues geared towards the sheep like gay marriage, abortion, border control, religion, etc...

The republicans/conservatives or whatever-the-hell you call them have gone a lot to the left actually. The republicans are kind of moderate while the democrats are way out in left field. Think about what conservative means at it root - to conserve. Like smaller government, being careful with your money, conserving resources, and so on. These people that today call themselves republicans, yeah whatever.

The bottom line is the agenda is more to the left and socialistic and keeps going more in that direction. We do not have true conservatives anymore. And since both parties run the same policy if one fucks up bad with the public they can be run out of office, impeached or "overthrown" for a time. But that's ok because the replacements will keep pushing the same program.

There's a major strategic agenda as far as where the country is being taken but so many are absorbed in gay marriage, "terrorism" and all the other garbage out there that they are never likely to see the grand plan.

I think this is where the Limbaugh/Olbermann thing comes in. There is no ideological clarity on the political horizon. Probably hasn't been for a long long time. left is right and right is left and so on. Republicans abandoning the small government mantra, Liberal judges siding with municipalities to take away citizens' houses so Pfizer can build an office building, etc. But we've got these entertainer/pundits to whip up an illusion of clarity.

First so that I am not accused of being a career leftie:

-While I was too young to vote for Nixon, I have always thought him to be a good president.

I voted for Reagan both times.

I voted for GHB both times.

With that out of the way, I will move to PMS's question on Olbermann versus Limbaugh.

Limbaugh is a fat drug addicted cheerleader for the worst presidency in this country's history.

OTOH, Olbermann is about the only person in the big corporate media willing to take on the worst presidency ever. I see him as the closest thing we have today to the great Edward R. Murrow.

Watch Olbermann's star rise over the coming months. Almost daily someone sends me a link to an Olbermann piece.

Like the quote above says, the GOP has left many people because it's veered to the extreme right over the past 6 years. The NeoCons are fanatical rightwingers who have signed a deal with the devil (i.e., fundie Xians) to gain power.

How PMS can even try to claim the two men are similar is beyond comprehension.
What will arrive first? Peak Oil or the Second Coming? My money is now on the latter.

there's plenty of dirt on the carnival barker, but if he's your guy, fine. I've said it before, if you've got your inane partisan showman for your entertainment pleasure to take pot shots at the Repugs and Bush and Limbaugh and O'Reilly etc, great, it's a free country and everybody needs a voice to look up to. It's a media circus, lokutus, all a ratings game. So in this sense, yeah, Olbermann can't hold a candle to Limbaugh and it isn't fair to compare them.

whats this got to do with the fact that you are a neocon pig? ;-)

These people are describing the exact thing I am pointing out yet they cannot grip it!!

The middle and the left were marginalized and are all viewed the same now - the old gaurd are now positioned as the middle with the new/neo conservative balancing the equation.

Isnt that simple enough or is everyone fuckin brain dead?

The media is controlled at least 70% to the right if not more.
I see it daily - even the middle of the road type networks have a familiar debate scheme - the moderate then the liberal and then end the segment with the conservative I like to call the "hammer" who always ends the series triumphant with superior logic!!! ;-)

Who couldnt win a "fixed" debate?
Who could lose a "fixed" election?

Like all the nonsense about 911 that appeared on the internet right after it all went down.
So much bullshit.......wonder who was behind all that.......
