As I age in years it is becoming more and more apparent to me how much religion fogs the judgement of people. I call them religious bigots or religious bigotry. You cannot be one with out the other.
A nation that believes that it can live long, free and ignorant, believes what never was and never will be...

In my experience, the Catholic groups have been some of the more accepting religious folk I've known. The church populations tend to have more ethnic variety and they don't seem as strict in their ideas. My own brother studied theology (almost became a priest) and I know that students of Catholic theology are required to learn about all of the other religions in detail and are not encouraged to be judgemental about them.

I've experienced the evangelical and fundamentalist churches to be judgemental and unyielding in their ideas about how people should live. It's my guess that if you lived in an area with a high percentage of the population that attended one of these types of churches, and you and your family did not, you would not be approached for friendship or social networking unless you indicated that you were possible recruits. I would also wager that in some areas, these groups could be quite harmful socially to anyone who looked or behaved in a way the church did not approve of. I'm talking about the groups that are so exclusive in their thinking that they believe people should only listen to religious music, for example. I have encountered this type of person and would not want to live where I was surrounded by them.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TITAN', 'S')o, what I get from some of this discussion is that, if TSHTF, I should:

1. keep my guns well oiled and sighted in.
2. ask newcomers if they are religious.
3. kill them dead if they are. Any children they bring will receive a humane attempt at de-programming...

Just to ask a befuddling question....

What about " religions of the state"? We all know certain hard-core left wingers who practically worship the state ie the old USSR is a good example.

Religion comes in many forms. As does narrow mindedness.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', 'N')one needed because that is discriminatory. Jobs in public companies have to be publicly offered as EOE. That is law.

Reality check;
Most companies aren't public, and public ones are outsourcing and downsizing as quickly as they absolutely can. Those that aren't are being put out of business.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')et's just stop with the long stories and say the truth. You are telling me that discrmiination is a fact of life and it will never change

I'm telling you what *is*.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'a')nd the fact that our Consitution tells we have the right to be free means exactly nothingin that equation. I'm telling you that it just simply is not going to be allowed to be that way. The US Constitution is not going to melt away

You've been ignoring the news the last few years I take it???? heck, we just sliced off a massive chunk of it just a week or two ago. You think the Constitution is going to keep people from awarding jobs by personal referal when it can't even keep you from being held in gitmo till you die and rot in place?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') won't tell you how I know that but trust me it won't happen.

I won't be offended either way, but I think you are being incredibly optimistic. Worse than any of the cornucopians that wander through here from time to time.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd I actually find your speech to be steroetypical of a person who knows bigotry exists and refuse to do anything about it. As for the job market, it is supposed to be about who is qualified, not who you know.

Unfortunately for your position, for any publicly offered position there will be dozens of people that are adequately qualified. In such cases the great class of "things that annoy the interviewer" will likely weigh heavily in choosing which qualified candidate gets the pick.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')mploy law needs to come in and fill the gap and solidify the notion of the separation of church and state for the protection of everyones rights.

You're definately living in a fantasy world; employment law will do no such thing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n fact you lose, because Joe will never do that job as well as the person you rejected because they had purple hair.

Joe doesn't want or care about who does the job best, he wants a quiet, non distracting, non confrontational office environment.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', 'I')f not I am certain that those who use religion to discriminate will eventually find themselves discriminated against. According to AgentR that would be fair play.

Fair has next to nothing to do with human behavior. However, yes, it is to be expected. EOE law can effect the practices of the very large companies, but even they are largely infiltrated by small companies that are well outside the ability of EOE stuff to have any tangible impact.

If a small company is comprised of eight black guys, and the surrounding area is average american with 13% or so black population; that does not prove the black owner discriminated. What it means is that he personally knew a couple people that he could trust and wouldn't lead him astray, they refered him to another five known individuals who were worthy of trust, and off they went. No small company is required to run a newspaper advertisement everytime they want to hire a draftsman or accountant; and they never do.

This has a double edge to it, in that the large company then contracts with Joe's crew for a service; so instead of BigCorp doing its hiring routine, job posting, etc etc; Joe gets the job done and his crew remains completely outside the reach of all that BigCorp EOE enforcement junk. And, since Joe gets the job done CHEAPER in almost every case, corporations have spent the last two decades casting off jobs that are not absolutely central to their profit centers.

So, if you want to thrive, either apply strictly to large corporations that will see you as mostly a resume and a cost center to be squeezed; or learn to fit in to the local community.

ElijahJones,

Re: your response to my post.

I was simply stating what has happened in my experience with the two different types of churches. I am not affiliated with any specific church. I can only comment on the behavior that I've encountered in the area where I live, and I realize that the extent of control one church or another has on an area can vary.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', 'W')ildrose: Human beings don't like the idea of generalities but theories about why humans do things do allow some generalizing. Religious groups, like any other human group can practice discrimination. I would not assume, nor do I think that you do, that a Christian label means Christian character or conduct. There are religious groups in this country who actively discriminate with impunity under the guise of freedom of religion. It will eventually need to be dealt with.

Agreed!
