Does removing oil leave a deep hole???

:?: When the Oil is removed from the Ground, What Replaces it? Will the Ground not give away so that even entire Countries would be filled with Ocean Water?

It seems to me, although admittedly, I AM NO EXPERT, that logic says that Countries such as those in the Middle East could easly collapse and become Ocean. This would drastically change the LandScape of the Planet with the Shifting of the Vast Amounts of Ocean Water. If this were to occur, would the Weight Distribution of the Earth be compromised causing the earth to rotate in a way that would change the Equator?

Ok, Go Ahead, tell me im crazy. All I know is we have pumped Billions and Billions of Petrolium from the Earth and I expect some Collapsing to start happening relatively soon.

You are correct.

Here in the UK I live in fear of the floor of the North Sea collapsing because of all the oil we have extracted. This would cause a tsunami which would crash into the country and carry us further south. I expect one day soon I’ll wake up and find England is just off the African coast. I’ve ordered some new sunglasses and planted palm trees in my garden so I’m ready for the big day.

You've read too much SF and doomeristic literature.

Initially the oil gets out alone due to internal pressure. When the internal pressure is no more, guess what... they pump water in. So, just forget about your wild image of huge empty caves underground waiting to collapse.

Also, there are porosity factors included.
So, I would say you are wrong.
And. about weight distribution, I would be more worried about ice sheets melting. There is some serious weight shifting.

Nothing like this is ever going to happen, mild local earthquick is all what you may get.

Also, just take US fields for example. They are empty or nearly empty. Have you heard of major collapses in US due to oil extraction? I didn't.

I hope that it helps. But please OP, next time let Nancy Lieder bunk in peace. No physical pole shifting for us :).

wasn't there a dam in Texas that collapsed because an oil sink hole opened up beneath it?
Angry yet?

I thought they said last year that New Orleans was not only sinking but also sliding towards the ocean because of oil pumping (?)

Pretty sure that's what they had said.

It is not so important what they said.
It is far more important who had said it (this will help to decide about *believing* him).

It is rather *sea*, what should slide to New Orlean (which is below sea level in large part), and not the other way.

Interesting topic. I guess it depends on how big the oil feild was and the hole is now and just how far down it is and what area land mass was thinned out and by how much/little? If you build a housing or commercial strip zone over a depleted field you could be in for a shock later down the road when your home or buisness falls into a sink hole.

Bruce Sterling wrote about a future where oil had run out, among other things.

There is evidence that the extraction of oil and gas in south Louisiana has contributed to settling and subsidence. The latter occurs naturally but historically was offset by deposition and near-shore distribution of Mississippi River sediment. Since the construction of river levees after the great flood of 1927, and growth of the "bird's foot," this sediment is now lost to the deeper Gulf of Mexico. So relative sea-level is rising (never mind thermal expansion of ocean water, which accounts for the majority of any recent sea level rise). In addition, the construction of canals for oil & gas drilling operations has encouraged the influx of salt water into fresh water marshes, accelerating land loss.

I suspect we withdraw more water from certain areas with no recharge (American southwest?) than oil and would be more concerned about sinkholes, etc. in that situation.
