Time Magazine 8/26/57…

From the story Too Many Babies? published the day I was born:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')aid Senior Vice President James Neville Land, 62, in the bank's weekly newsletter: "Our rising population is creating pressures on natural resources which tend to retard further increases in material wellbeing. We must dig deeper oil wells and exploit less productive veins of coal and go farther afield for water supplies, all of which is a drag on prosperity."

It is a drag alright :)

They saw it coming in '57 and didn't like, wave a flag, and say, "Woee! Lets think about what we're creating here????"

We're working longer, while simultaneously leveraging a vast array of machinery to increase our productivity, in order to.... umm. Have basically what most middle class, single income, 40hr/wk families had in the fifties.

Happy Birthday, Pops!

Just 49, though?

Thanks Turtle, remember though, I had a rough paper-route! ;^)

<<about what rw said>>

It strikes me that the 50s fascination with drapeless picture window conformity is a mirror of Upton Sinclair’s ninetieth century pan of small-town life in Main Street.

Just as todays endless drive to acquire each year's newest car (in the trendiest color) and cell phone (with distinctive ring tone of course) is a reflection of our urge to conform, while we simultaneously attempt to fool ourselves that we are unique.

I think "the faster I go; the behinder I get" relates more to our relative position in the race to conform to idea that the Jones' perceived wealth equals their perceived happiness than any attempt to recreate the lifestyle our parents may have enjoyed – or at least that they appear to have enjoyed in the reruns.

.

Now is that one sly method of getting birthday congrats er what! ;-)

Happy birthday you old geezer heheh

Can someone who is 35 say that to someone who is 49? ;-)

Ok what RWWFF suggests might have worked to a degree but to do so TPTB would have had to go against one of the biggest voting blocs in their arsenal - namely Religious folks.

Imagine forcing catholics/mormons and the others to use condoms or birth control.
Some of these people would rather die then do something that they feel is against their god head.
Knowing the facts of overshoot I would now kindly oblige.
Locked and loaded sir - just point me toward the rebels and say "fire at will".

Anyways - birthdays depress me - hope they dont depress you ;-)
It is easier to enslave a people that wish to remain free then it is to free a people who wish to remain enslaved.

There is more than one reason for trolling!

Thanks NEO, the wife doesn’t feel well and I’m taking a day off and drinking beer in front of the silly-screen while most of our fellow POers are out driving around and spending money so I thought I’d chum up some conversation.

Actually, I plug the current date into google from time to time when I don’t really want to do anything useful just to see what comes up – I thought that one was apropos.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'K')nowing the facts of overshoot I would now kindly oblige.

I remember a tee-shirt I had in '74 with a big green ZPG on the front – I’m responsible for one offspring (that I know of) and since she is tougher than me I probably didn’t achieve that goal.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nyways - birthdays depress me - hope they dont depress you ;-)

Naw, I have a hard time remembering how old I am - seems like around 32, six feet tall and bulletproof. :-D

I think Studs Terkel (sp?) asked something along the lines of:

Who wants to be 80 anyway?

And answered his own question…

Anyone that is 79.

Happy Birthday Pops.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.
