Russian Researchers Say Rains Boost Oil Reserves
Created: 08.08.2006 12:58 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 13:57 MSK

MosNews

A group of Russian scientists at the oil and gas research institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, led by Azary Barenbaum, have come up with a new explanation of the nature of oil and gas formation. They argue that huge reserves of hydrocarbons may take only decades to be formed, not millions of years, as earlier believed. The new theory was published this month in the leading Russian scientific magazine Nauka I Zhizn (Science and Life).

Researchers have registered an increase in oil reserves in oil-rich provinces where deposits were explored and have been developed for many years and where oil consumption is comparatively high. Those oil-rich areas include the Russian province of Tatarstan, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Texas and Oklahoma in the U.S., and Mexico. Depletion of reserves is possible only in the oil and gas exploration areas where consumption levels are low, holds Professor Barenbaum. He insists that formation of oil and gas is not so geological as climatic by nature, related to the water cycle and circulation of carbon on our planet.

The decisive role in that process belongs to carbon infiltrating the earth’s surface with rains in the course of their incessant circulation. Carbons entering the surface — chiefly in the form of hydrogen carbonate — along with rain waters transform into hydrocarbons, which create the basis for accumulation of oil and gas in geologic traps.

Conclusions drawn by the specialists of the oil and gas research institute have been confirmed in the course of exploratory drilling in the Moscow Region. The researchers have concluded that up to 90 percent of all oil and gas reserves on the planet are formed at the depth of 1 to 10 km and only 10 percent are formed out of organic waste. Hence, the entire process of formation takes decades, not millions of years, Russian scientists say.

yup - same folks who brought you Abiotic theory.

On the other hand - Russia is so big and still has a wealth of *everything-you-ever-wanted*. My daughter was in Siberia last year and gasoline is *very* cheap (problem is you just can't afford the car LOL).

So ... in a likelyhood .. oil has not peaked for Russia (ok ok maybe peaked but certainly could be sustained at current level). Problem is, to what ends of the earth (Arctic zone) does it take? And Putin likely will hold his Ace cards.

If Jesus can turn water into wine

then I see no reason why

Russian Scientists cannot turn rain water into oil.

...No, the Russians will turn rain water into vodka, and then drink that, and then tell jokes about how oil is created. :)

How many times have we heard Abiotic oil now?

Seriously guys, give it up. It ain't conclusive, and it's not even plausable.

Exactly what I thought.

I think oil is abiotic, it just takes millions of years for it to form again.

I've never got the line of thinking that goes with abiotic oil destroys peak oil. Just because the source of the oil may be different from what is thought, that changes nothing about the production rates of oil. It's like disproving all of our physical, biological and chemical laws if creationism were found to be true. The laws are still the same no matter what.

It's more like disproving that species are becoming extinct by saying you believe in creationism. It's so far from normal logic that there's nothing you can do with somebody with that sort of flawed reasoning.

Can't we drill for oil on the Moon?
And then make a huge pipe straight down to Earth.

I bet there is a lot of the good stuff on the Moon ... I know for sure that aliens use some advanced refining procedures, to refine fuel for their spaceships.

If we did that, we would eliminate the tides.

In fact, we would remove the moon from view for an entire half of the planet.

Think about it.

The moon takes 29 days to travel around the earth.

If we put a big pipe (read, chain) to the moon, the moon would be forced to speed up and travel around the earth every 24 hours.

Otherwise the pipe would snap.

Also, we would experience frequent solar eclipses near the place where the pipeline was coming from. (Most likely a field just outside of Dallas, Texas)

Damn!
I thought I solved the issue of Peak Oil.
All that good black stuff spinning around us :)

We should shoot it down or something. Capture it and bring it to earth. I am sure our russian scientist friends could help us.
