French Fries are back on the US House of Representives menu

Unread postby Carlhole » Sun 06 Aug 2006, 11:31:06

BBC News

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BBC', 'F')rench fries are back on the menu in the US House of Representatives, three years after the name was ditched in favour of "freedom fries".

House Republicans renamed fries and French toast in 2003 to protest at France's opposition to the war on Iraq.

The patriotic name change hit the headlines at the time but the change back is getting much less coverage.

A House official would only say that fries are no longer being offered under the "freedom" nomenclature...

It should be noted that on most menus they are simply refered to as "fries". I like fried potato better than french fries. I don't have a better name for french toast though. [bread dipped in a mix of egg, sugar, vanila, and nutmeg, then skillet fried.]

How about some George Bush deep fried in a vat of his own excrement?

The alternative name for "French toast" is, surprisingly, "egg bread".

Egg bread seems more appropriate for describing the type of bread dough that has an egg in it.

I think the irony in all this is...the french don't even call them french fries, they call them "pommes frites". They weren't even invented in France. They originally come from Belgium.

That's hilarious, especially given the long and noble history of "disagreement" between the poms and the frogs.

It's only in recent times that the French and Brits have gotten along. And I suspect that era is nearing an end.

As for the "french" part of fries, for those that don't know: It's because they're "frenched" (which means cut lengthways (ie they should be frenched fries, but the '-ed' got dropped somewhere along the way, as seems to happen often with the English language...).

It should have been just "fries". Eliminates confusion.

Nope. They call them "pommes allumettes" which means "Apple matches"!

Uh?? what is that supposed to mean? it seems random French words put together!

It reads: "A politician is a donkey on the back of which each one has already ride except for one man! They should have their stupid donkeys are completly drunk with something more simply the French than the fried potatoes!!!"
which doesn't mean anything, it isn't even grammatical...
