Browsing this forum it seems to me most people here are middle class, not that there is anything wrong with that. I'm just less likely to believe the doom and gloom scenarios that you forsee.

Rich people aren't running for the hills or making massive changes to their investments, even though they have the most to lose and the best information avalible.

Sorry for appearing arrogant, but that is my 2 pennies.

I am not wealthy in the financial sense. However I do make good money and have very few bills. I am far better off than most Americans financially.

It also helps to define wealthy.

Is it someone that has had great success?
Is it someone who has a family and house in the burbs?
Is it someone who has a close family and lots of friends?

A person's wealth is often measured by the fulfillment of their desires and for some those desires have little or nothing to so with money.

Wealth in my opinion, means you can kill your neighbors and be able to pay someone else to take the fall.

PO is an economic issue at its core.

So I doubt Mr. Gates really has much too worry about. Cash is king and he will still be at the top of the heap when the dust settles – though it may be a smaller heap.

But as you correctly point out, the middle class should worry as they have all the debt, and the greatest dependence on the existing system continuing at par. But they could make changes in their life if they became convinced enough and so they worry the old bone constantly.

The working poor unfortunately may find themselves in the street but then again they are usually half way there anyway and certainly few have the time to jawbone here.

First, the US government defines the wealthy as someone who has over $500k net in investable assets. This excludes primary housing and recreational items like arts and crafts. If you fall into this category, you qualify for special tax status and legally treated differently.

For instance:
Person A claims: "I guarantee your investments."
In fine print, it states the investments are only guarantee by the full faith of the company.

The company goes bankrupt. You lose your investment.
If you are not wealthy legally, you can sue the person privately in civil court and possibly win damages against the person. If you are wealthy, then the limited liability clause in the company will prevent you from claiming personal properties of the person who stated the verbal guarantee. Wealthy investors are categorized as sophisticated investors and are thought to be smart enough to protect themselves with lawyers reviewing their contracts, etc....

I am not sure why there is this belief that the wealthy are not interested in PO. Our current high oil prices came about due to wealthy individuals foresee tight oil supplies before most major firms. They bought heavily and drove up spot prices to the current records.

They view this as a opportunity to make more money.
