Sobriety: Joys and Pitfalls

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sun 16 Jul 2006, 10:47:45

Why do people drink? They have been doing it since the dawn of time. When a hamster runs in it's cage, going nowhere, just running for the hell of it, it probably doesn't have much awareness of what it is doing, it just does it. Give the hamster self-awareness, give it the curse of knowing all about the futility of running to make the cage spin, and it might want some Jack Daniels. Set someone down in front of a TV to watch a football game and they might want some too. Or maybe just a couple six-packs of beer. Let someone listen in and attempt to join pointless, repetitive arguments about 911 and they will definately need to tie one on. Of course, one could be responsible and have just a couple and participate. But if there is a Hell, it is probably being forced to listen to fruitless arguments about 911 for eternity and never getting one iota closer to the truth. So what do you get with sobriety? Well, you feel good in the morning! You can save your money! And if you are lucky, you might find some peace of mind like you're supposed to have.

Good lord, pms! Do you realize that you are approaching 6,000 posts to PO.com?

With the exception of Montequest, that has to be an all-time high for these fourms, I would think.

smallpoxgirl might be right that you need to find a new way to spend your Friday nights. :P

I quit alcoholic beverages years ago for health. Alcohol kills things, and the cells in one's body is not an exception.

You got that right. Funny emoticons notwithstanding, if one is going to drink, it's important to quit for a while from time to time and let the body repair as I've been doing lately. Daily consumption above a reasonable amount causes cirrhosis of the liver and other problems. The interesting question, though, is how the stuff appeals at all given that it is poison.

I call getting smashed "temporary suicide". Do it enough and it becomes "permanent suicide".

Moderation in all things, quitting for a while - excellent, but PLEASE don't ask me to stay on the wagon. I come from irish peasant stock, we drank for breakfast, were paid in ale, its CULTURAL goddamnit!

Any guesses on how breweries will do further down the backslope? Sure they'll have a market, but i'm hoping they'll lack sufficient specific inputs to supply demand. Then my racks of king browns will come into their own, he he he.

Congrats PMS, on such generosity. I'm reminded of the emergence of gay pride, will everybody soon be 'out and proud' about how much time they spend trawling for clues, or laughs, or whatever draw them online. Can you tell a keen netizen when meet them in meat space?

Oh, and BTW liam, I'm not "out and proud" about posting so much and spending so much time here. Smallpoxgirl and Turtle were poking fun at me for it, that's all. My response is just to be ironic and cheerful. :) Ever since I started this not quite two years ago, I've been fascinated and delighted with such a venue for self-expression and conversation. And all the while, I keep one eye on the dreaded peakoil situation. Laughs are great, and we've all shared a few, but I'll bet I've managed to antagonize everyone at one point or another. :-D

BTW, have any of you ever heard of the experiments regarding the inner core reward system of the brain that they did with rats? There seems to be some kind of ultimate reward thing built into animal brains that basically says it's cool to be alive. If that particular part of the brain is stimulated with electrodes the effect surpasses anything, heroin, you name it, it is the ultimate. Rat's will starve themselves to death if given the choice between having that nerve ending massaged or having food. Pretty grim, really, and glorious too in a macabre way.

It is the God part of the brain. It's hard to reach (without electrodes). Saint Anthony went into the desert, and ate locusts in pursuit of it. He knew that eroticism wouldn't cut it. He fought off the DNA demon. He knew what he was looking for. It isn't sexual. It doesn't come with wine. It doesn't come with opium. It's there, like the mirage in the desert, very ephemeral. The fact that it can be reached with electrodes is the ultimate insult of science to humanity. The ultimate nagation of meaning.
