You're right, they do seem pretty aware for the most part.

I wonder if they've considered the implications of peak oil on professional sports. It takes a lot of fuel for pro teams and their entourages to constantly criss-cross the country in charter jets. And I'm guessing most of the tens of thousands of fans in the large venues didn't get there on the bus. And how many of them will be able to continue to afford tickets prices approaching 3 figures with the money they have left after paying their gas and utility bills?

Good point. I have thought about this alot. Sports will be majorly affected by PO. Also, when the economic decline starts ( already has ), who is going to keep shelling out money to go see these sports ? Not me.

Hey the word is getting out- that guy is clear, succinct, not preachy and willing to introduce the basics. Give him a slot on the PO show!

I think PO will affect professional sports by increasing interest in the minor leages. It is much cheaper to go to a minor leage game then it is to watch the majors in baseball. I could see college basketball replacing the NBA as a cheaper alternative for that fanbase. Soccer could even replace football in a more powered down America.

Think about your average Major League team, Crossing the country weekly. Baseball and Basketball can go from cali to florida to Dallas to NY all in a week. Huge travel expenses.

I have decided one of the main areas to watch is transportation. Airline, bussing company and freight companies. Sports franchises are a good periphery industry to watch. When the mom and pops of these industries start selling or closing in droves, then the minor players are squeezed out and the big boys are crying for government subsidies, thats the time to really get your bags packed and guns loaded. The first worst is about to hit the fan, then it just keeps getting harder from there.

That was a good read, though I am really hoping for more time to get set up, damn PO came too soon for me, or I found out about it too late maybe. I need 3-5 years lol. Looks like it wont be too long before its main stream and common knowledge. Thats when it starts to get scary. When pple realize they have nothing to lose and nothing to live for, watch out!

professional sports teams make a pretty good amount of money, somehow I doubt they'll be one of the first knocked off as they have more than enough overhead to support higher fuel bills. yea they'll hit the wall eventually too but not until after everyone else has been feeling it for quite a while.

They can pay ridiculous 10 mil a year salaries but are gonna go out of business from 10$ gas??

But where does all that money come from? Ticket sales, licensed merchandise sales, and television rights. The price of the TV rights is based on the ability to draw consumers of pickup trucks and name brand beer to the advertiser's commercials. All those revenue sources sound pretty discretionary and are likely to plummet in times of ever increasing economic difficulties.

I watched 'Cinderella Man' last night, and the main thing I took away from it was that people still attended boxing matches during the depths of the great depression.

Heavily institutionalized entertainment will be among the last industries to take the fall, which is stupid but thats the way it is.

yeah, but 50.00 seats, 8.00 beers, 5.00 sodas, 6.00 popcorn and 15.00 parking is what drives professional sporting events, and this will be one of the first things people will cut out.

It's not unusual for sports fans to understand what's going on given their interest in statistics. If you look at some of the smart commentators you get people like Keith Olberman and Jim Lampley who are sports people and keen political analysts; both of those guys were aghast at how the election results did not match the poll numbers. And then you have sports writer Charles Pierce who can write circles around just about any politics pundit out there.

As I grow older I pay less and less attention to sports, but use what I have learned from sports in my understanding of human nature.

You know, it's kinda annoying how since the internet is very hard to regulate, that's where alot of the scum of the earth groups went and started festering. I'd love it if I never had to view another link to a white supremisist site. I mean, does that really advance your viewpoint or this posts statement any?

I am however glad that the PO idea's are starting to spread. It might make a difference in the long run, it might make no difference at all. But in the end, it might make alot of our plans easier to impliment.

that ramwaggon dude did some major educating on a football message board. Some people tried to dispute, but were shot down quickly. People are really ignorant about PO, and I feel bad for them. They wont take the time to research, they just want to repeat what the msm feeds them. Too bad.

Regarding costs for professional teams, the minimum salary for a player Major League Baseball in 2004 was $316,000, for a Minor League player on a team with a 40-person roster, $52,600.

The minimum salary for a player in the NBA is dependent on the number of years in the NBA, but for the 06-07 season starts at $412,000 for 1 year in the NBA, up to $1.18 million for 10+ years.

The WNBA also has minimum salaries of $30,000 to $45,000 depending on years of service.

The minimum NHL salary for 06-07 will be $450,000.

All that money is able to chase the best players, as the best players provide the best entertainment, and the best entertainment best pacifies the masses.

As long as people keep looking for remedies to their pain instead of solutions to their situations, entertainment in general and professional sports specifically will be around. It's like modern entertainment is a drug, the media is a pusher, and various businesses and governments are the enabling mafias who take their cut.
