Version 1:
Do not accept what you hear by report, do not
accept tradition, do not accept a statement
because it is found in your books, nor because
it is in accord with your belief, nor because it is
the saying of your teacher. Be lamps unto
yourselves. Those who, either now or after I
am dead, shall rely upon themselves only and
not look for assistance to anyone besides
themselves, it is they who shall reach the
topmost height.
Version 2:
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it
or who has said it, not even if I have said it,
unless it agrees with your own reason
and your own common sense.
Version 3:
Believe nothing, O monks, merely because
you have been told it . . . or because it is
traditional, or because you yourselves have
imagined it. Do not believe what your teacher
tells you merely out of respect for the teacher.
But whatsoever, after due examination and
analysis, you find to be conducive to the good,
the benefit, the welfare of all beings—that
doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as
your guide.
