Hi there,

I am 24 and just quit my mill job, I am interested in working in the Oil & Gas industry.

I have 2 positions I can take right now but I'm not sure which one to take. I want to take the one with better pay.

What job pays more:

Production Testing (Well Tester)

or

Wireline helper leading into Wireline Operator

any info would be greatly appreciated because I have to make my decison tomorrow being Friday sometime.

thank you for your time and consideration

regards,

Darren Richard

With which company? May be able to say more aboout how excite you should be.

My first serious job was wireline engineer. Get ready for long hours if you get through the training stage. However the bonuses are BIG if you start to run your own jobs. Responsibility great also. No margine for error, or you get fired. :-)

Well Testing, well the hours are not as long since once the test starts you are basicly monitoring and not continuously changing something (wireline you are doing something every second ). However here the margine for error is even smaller than wireline as you are working in a high pressure environment and potentially explosive situation (flowing oil/gas/water ). This depends on the type of test. Compensation is probable OK but I do not think as good as a top wireline engineer.

Are there any entry level jobs in the Oil & Gas industry that pay more than others?

What's the highest paid entry level job on the oil patch?

Thank you again for your time and consideration

Hi Darren

I worked with Schlumberger. That is top of the food chain in this business. The training was super as was the quality of the equipment. A university degree was required for entry.

Entry level. From what I understand there are two paths in this business. Start as a laborer and learn a trade or get a degree. The two starting points could take you to the same destination but not necessarily.

With Schlumberger you need the degree.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Are there any entry level jobs in the Oil & Gas industry that pay more than others? ')

Sorry but I have no idea how this looks at this level today. I do know that there is a shortage of TRAINED personnel. So some companies will probable take someone off the street and train them if the person appears to have the potential to do the job.

Best to get a start somewhere and then get a better look at how things look. To get the highest pay you need experience, that means working in as broad of a range of work in a given area. To get this you need to start and see how you like the work.

I was an Earth Science major. My friends mocked me for selling out to the oil companies. It was so much more glamorous to unravel Gaia's secrets than to make a buck. I have to admit, the joys of unraveling the mysteries of plate tectonics was probably more satisfying than finding oil for the greedy maw of civilization. Specially now that we all realize what's happening. But when the greedy maw of civilization is starved of energy, none of us will fare well.
