Pics of my personal range, pics of where I grew up

Unread postby Specop_007 » Wed 21 Jun 2006, 08:59:01

Went back home this weekend for my 10 year class reunion. Snapped a few pics of the farm where I grew up. Figured I'd share them, show all you guys how much of a hillbilly I really am.

Heres my personal range I made. The picture was taken from an elevated conrete pad which is the deck (Seen in later pics). The hydrant is roughly 40 yards down, so I'm still in the orchad at 50 yards. If I go into the field behind the orchad, well, you aint got enough rifle to use up my range. ;)

Image

Heres the field behind the range to give you an idea how far it goes. The farm waaay back there is a little over 1.5 miles away

Image

Just south of the range we parked the old tractor. We dont use it anymore, but she still runs. Damned thing is a monster, its got lugging power that makes a diesel look like a lawn mower. The tractor is facing towards where the current garden is, and where our old house used to be. It was a trailer house, and a pretty shitty one at that.

Image

If you walk to the end of my range and turn about 45 degrees to the left (facing north-east) you can see the church. Thats where I got married.

Image

At the end of the range is a lane that runs north-south. The previous picture if from the lane, if you follow it just north of the orchard you get to the bins. Can you say "Survival grain storage"? Yeah, those survivalists with some cans in the basement dont have shit on us.

Image

Heres a picture from the top of the bins, facing north-west. You can see our pasture just on the left side, the rest is fields.

Image

Here we are from the same bin facing north, with the church on the right side of the picture.

Image

This if from the bin facing south. You can see the "lane" I was talking about on the left side, which curves around in front of the bins and runs off to the right. The Minnie (Yellow tractor from above) is right about in the middle of the pic. My range is in the orchard, running from right to left with the deck being on the right side (Not visible).

Image

Again from the bins, facing east.

Image

This if from the other bin, facing south-west. The roof you see in the trees is actually the roof of our old house.

Image

From the bin, facing the church again. (Trying to get a "close up", my camera blows)

Image

This is from the lane in front of the bins, facing towards the west. The almost fallen in shed, well, thats my fault its almost fallen in.....Kind of a long story to that involving a dead animal, tow rope and a bit too much throttle......

Image

This is from the end of the lane, by where the gate to the corrals is from the previous pic facing south.

Image

Picture of the corrals, same position as pic above but facing towards the west.

Image

The driveway, which runs in front of the shop 2 pictures up.

Image

The workhorses of the farm. I've went round n round more times then I care to count in both of those.

Image

The old workhorse. Shes a dual fuel, starts on gas then throw a switch to go to diesel. Fed alot of cows with that......

Image

This is walking down the driveway just past the 2 shops and looking south.

Image

Walked a bit south in the last picture, then turned to face back east (Yes, we're doing a circle around the farm) You can see our new house on the middle left. That deck also functions as my range depending on the weather and time of day. Facing south off the deck gives me more range then the other range. And we get half a mile on that one without blinking an eye....... So, what do YOU want to shoot today? I can accomodate.....

Image

Fields of gold......

Image

To give you an idea how far out we are.....If you look at the second telephone pole from the left, just to the left of the 2nd pole you can make out grain elevators. There white and hazy so its hard to spot them, but they are there if you look closely. Those are around 10 miles away. The town is population 1500 (Roughly), so its not a big town by any stretch.

Image

This is from the deck of the new house, facing east. It did serve as my range, until I didnt observe the "Know whats behind your target" and shot a branch off of a fruit tree. Yeah, mom wasnt too happy about that......
You can also see the garden towards the back, which is again where our old house used to sit.

Image

The front of the new house, from the middle of the lane that comes in from the driveway and runs around the farm. And of course, my son being silly.....

Image

Here we are from the deck of the old house looking south at the new house. The new house sits right where the old garden used to be.

Image

And this is from the deck of the new house facing north towards the old house, which is where the first pic was snapped from. Yep, thats our old house......And if you think that peice of shit is bad, you should have seen the other house.....

Image

And thats the farm. Just a good ole country boy who likes to be back home...... :)

Wow - that place is as big as most of England!

You could certainly fit Holland in there!

Seriously, I'm not sure if you could find an empty view like that in the UK.

A British farm would be a FRACTION of that land size.
Technology will save us!

Nice pics, Spec. I assume that farm is in eastern or central KS, right? Reminds me of Oklahoma. Good times.
I'll bet the sunsets are cool, I've seen a few from there.

Lot's of raw Americana in there. I didn't realize you had a sentimential side, Spec. Very nice pictorial story. Maybe you should put together a coffee table book.

Maybe I should post some pics of my beloved Pennsylvania.

Wow Spec, that is awesome. But since I'm an Appalachian gal, the flatness would drive me nuts. I can't take good pictures here, all you would see is up the hill, down the hill :-D

--LOL, same as I do with my parents' farm in S. Okla. I'm going to be up in SW Iowa (Red Oak) over Independence Day, so I'll "sorta" be in your neighborhood. I love the landscape up in that part of the U.S.

Great pics there. The land is so flat there you see the curvature of Earth like on the open ocean only this is land. Some places in America's heartland can be pretty desolate with nothing but more farms for 400 miles in any direction.

How many ICE-powered machines and vehicles can we count in those pics? Any questions about how hard farming will be hit when diesel fuel and gasoline start to get truly scarce?

Actually, its people in the cities I worry about.
More then 1 farmer has already thought about switching to biodiesel.
And why not?
They can literally grow the crops to make their fuel, then sell the extra crops.

In other words, the farmers machines will keep running, but the food stocks that make it to market will be less.

But your point is valid. Farmers really feel a pinch when fuel costs rise. At this point its roughly a wash to being a bit cheaper to go no-till then to work in the traditional manner. The cost of chemicals to do no-till has dropped whereas the costy of fuel has risen.

Spec,

Nice place. Are you thinking about trying your hand at farming should the economy go south?

Looks very... flat.

Anything going to be growing in that bare looking field this season?

Well, looks like you have clear shooting in every direction. So when the suburban zombies come for you in every direction, I imagine you will be glad you chose a semi-auto instead of a bolt action.

Built with a level.

Nope, the bare fields will be planted this fall, then harvested next summer. Right now its almost harvest time for wheat, corn and other crops will come later on this year.
