Hmm. I'd say it's borderline. We try to keep the front page articles strictly energy-related, and this article has only passing mention of gas prices.

It is very interesting, though. The usually milktoast Parade is calling for people to vote on the issue of prices, including gas prices. 8O

The message here is that people believe prices will go back down.

If you believed prices are going to stay forever high, then you would change your ways instead of a temporary fix.

Sad thing is, I'd bet most of these pawn shop items are not even paid off yet on their credit cards.

That would be rational, but human behavior is not always based on reason. That's why I get nervous when people say things like "don't worry; if oil becomes too scarce, they'll outlaw cars to make sure there's still enough for agriculture". That would be reasonable, but that doesn't mean it would be done.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Laughs_Last', 'W')hen I heard about this on NPR, it got me thinking. Hey, I should go to a pawnshop some time and see if people are bringing in the kind of stuff I want. I’ve never been in a pawnshop before, so it could be interesting. But now I wonder should I instead save my money in order to break into the lucrative child slave trade?

Joking aside, are pawnshops just electric guitars and bling, or do people bring in useful stuff like chain saws? And what should I expect for prices compared to retail? If I took something into a pawn shop, what percent of its value would I get?

I think they have handguns and wedding rings along with the guitars.

There are a couple of other threads on this topic. One of them mentioned that people are pawning things they need for their jobs. For example, a landscaper pawned one of his lawnmowers - for gas money so he could drive his kids to school. A veterinarian pawned some of his medical equipment.

For years now I've seen power tools probably ditched after being used a few times like table saws and steamvacs, also bikes, tvs not neccesarily stolen but most likely ditched to lighten the load and get some cash before a move.
But that depends on the neighborhood as well. Out here in Chicago you could see power tools and bikes in Lakeview but a whole different story in other poorer neighborhoods.
Oh yeah Grand Master Imperator Daley Maximus will not allow firearms within city limits. Sorry Bruin but you could do some damage with a chainsaw. Leaving you enough money for a diamond studded Hockey Mask ; )

Jesus Almighty Christ, what are people going to be doing when it hits five bucks a gallon? What's next, body parts? How much gas could you get for the price of a healthy kidney?

I would like to get a GOOD chainsaw, one that was built from a metal frame. No more of todays designed to break in half with light use saws. Buying solidly build older style systems is a good idea, and there is a discount over retail...I buy DVD's there, easy to get a fistful for the price of even a single one retail.

Go...visit one. They are great places, were people sell off their ill got gains...and get deeper into debt. Profit from others misery.

On the upside, your body would also be significantly lighter - thereby making a saving on any fuel you happen to buy with the proceeds. (Thinks: I wonder if Alastair Cooke's legs were stolen to pay for a vacation jaunt?)

I had a woman from up the street randomly knock on my door yesterday and ask for $3 gas money so she could pick up her son. 8O

If she's already resorting to door-to-door begging, what's she going to do when/if things get really bad?

I wasn't the one who answered the door and only heard about it later. Yes, money changed hands, so she will probably be back.

Hey, you never know. The "social capital" you earned by giving her money to pick up her kid might come in handy when TSHTF.

It's easy to daydream about "social capital" while everyone's stomach is full. Face it - if she doesn't have the gas to pick up her kid today she'll never be an asset if TSHTF. Don't let her see you carrying cases of cannned goods into your house...

Not necessarily. She may not be prepared or have money. She could still warn you that the press gangs are coming, in time for you to hide your kids.

During the depths of the Depression my dad was the only one on the block who had a job. When he or my mom came home from grocery shopping, they would pull the car into the garage and close the door before opening the trunk and stealthily slipping the bags of groceries into the house.

Pawnshop Society

Unread postby TheDude » Sat 03 May 2008, 22:31:43

Picked this up at Mish:

Booming pawnshop business

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')People are cleaning out their houses of gold, silver, whatever, to get money just to fill their cars with gas," said Nat Leonard, 51, whose grandfather opened Society Hill in 1929. "People are pawning out like crazy." "I've got business owners coming in to pawn things just to make their payrolls," Leonard said, incredulous. "I've never seen that before."

"Upper-income people are in pawnshops nowadays, needing money right away to meet payments," said Bill Stull, chairman of the department of economics at Temple University's Fox School of Business and Management.

"We are in an economy in which many people are living right at the margins, even middle- and upper-income people. They have little savings, they've borrowed so much, their credit-card bills are high, and their house values are going down."

Desperation amidst flea market boom

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')o meet higher gas, food and prescription drug bills, they are selling off grandmother's dishes and their own belongings. Some of the household purging has been extremely painful — families forced to part with heirlooms.

"This is not about downsizing. It's about needing gas money," said Nancy Baughman, founder of eBizAuctions, an online auction service she runs out of her garage in Raleigh, N.C. One former affluent customer is now unemployed and had to unload Hermes leather jackets and Versace jeans and silk shirts.

At Craigslist, which has become a kind of online flea market for the world, the number of for-sale listings has soared 70 percent since last July. In March, the number of listings more than doubled to almost 15 million from the year-ago period.

I definitely see it around here. I was in a pawnshop recently, and I couldn't believe the number of people coming in to sell stuff.

Lots of people showed up with furniture, jewelery and all sorts of things in the short time that I was in there.

The people who were in there weren't the typical pawn shop denizens. They needed money not for drugs or booze, but to keep the car filled up and food on their tables.
Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings.
