0-0 scores suck some of the joy out of this beautiful game, IMO. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, but football is still by far the most popular game in the world... Maybe the frustration is part of the charm somehow? Bah!

Let's say it like this: Do you have sex only to get an orgasm? Do you climb up a mountain only to get to the top and look down?

Of course a goal is the crown of every game, but the bigger the possible frustration, the bigger the possible joy...

What personally frustrates me most about soccer is that it's so random, at least on the surface, so much chaos and coincidence.
It's like life itself?
But this makes it a great team sport, because before individual skill comes team spirit and mental strength, this is why an underdog like Greece could win the European Championship, and this is the beauty of the game...

By this way of thought, do you also think all people should form their own bands rather than attending concerts or listen to recorded music? It's all about talent and skills, man! Watching other people perform at the highest possible level is enjoyable almost regardless of activity. Then again, people who play football or race cars themselves probably enjoy watching others perform these tasks at a deeper level than I do, as they better understand just how great the greatest really are.
Excercise and artistry are not the same.

A good response, but I question the assumption that sports are equal to art, art requires creativity. not just execution of a rule system. nevertheless it is a good argument, and I would agree with you that Micheal Jordan (for example), is 'talented', and possibly even 'creative'.

and I would certainly agree that there is nothing wrong with enjoying anything in moderation. I came off harshly (was picking a fight I suppose ;)). my revised point would be 'if sports is your life, and you aren't playing them, you are wasting it'. by all means enjoy the games :)

Apparently you've never watched sports. To say that high level athletes are not creative is almost insane, have you really watched the things they do? In most sports it's a combination of discipline, required for staying within the rules, Stamina, and creativity. You can be a good player with the first two, but you absolutely need the last to be a great player and thats what the people want to see. The things some of those athletes pull out of nothing to get around the competition is nothing short of amazing. Especially, IMO, in hockey and soccer........uh I mean football

That said I'm sure you're just not a sports person. Actually I'm not really much of a sports person either. I like playing sports but I find watching them incredibly boring for the most part. I recognize the amazing skill being put on display, but I I can only get into watching a sport if I'm in some way emotionally attached. Such as for instance to the OILERS. :-D Man I love that hockey team........

Anybody else watching the NHL finals? The oilers hung in there tonight after an absolutely embarrassing second game. I was 8 the last time they won the cup and can just barely remember it, lets do it one more time before it all comes crashing down boys. GO OILERS GO!!!!!!

p.s. Sorry to highjack the football thread to rant and plug the oilers but it seemed appropriate enough.

One could easily argue that excellence in, say, classic ballet is creativity within a set of rules (there are only so many "legal" moves in ballet).

I feel the exact opposite. I dislike the feeling I get when I'm emotionally invested in the outcome of something as trivial as a sports game. I recognice all sors of uglyness within my psyche: partisanship, nationalism, pettiness... you name it. I get the most enjoyment out of a game when I don't care who's winning and I can just focus on the skill of the performers, regardless of their nationality or team affiliation.
It has struck me that the hysterical atmosphere among the fans at a sports arena is quite similar to the psychotic vibe one can find in holy-ghost-preaching, shaking-on-the-floor churches. I find this kind of groupthink interesting to observe but difficult to take part in. But then again maybe I'm just a boring introvert.

Thats a good point. I do tend to get pretty pissed off when my team loses, almost like that guy on Anger Management who can't watch sports cause he freaks out on every bad play. Not of course to that extreme but it's the same sort of thing. Nonetheless I just can't get into watching a team play that I don't care about. Oh well soon enough professional sports will either be non-existent or for the super rich in their fortified communities only :)

I'll enjoy the Oilers last run for the cup while it lasts. GO OILERS!

Here's what some of us over here want to see: final match up in Berlin on July 9th between Mexico and the US. Ha! that would be great! All North America. All those bone heads around the world could just bum out and slink home depressed. Schwein would probably crawl into the bottle once and for all. It could happen, there's been a synergy between Mexico and the US ever since the last World Cup and the defeat of Mexico by the US, with both teams growing stronger by the year in a sort of Football Arms Race.

Wow we suck! 3-0 is a pretty crushing defeat at this caliber event.

Didn’t see the game yet but heard a bit streaming at the work desk. The announcers weren’t too thrilled by the US performance. I wonder if we can even beat Ghana. I’m sure Italy will thrash us. Oh well. At least we’re good at consuming resources and destabilizing the world. :oops:

Ghana played very well against Italy today! Italy finally won with 2 - 0.

I missed France - Switzerland but I heard France sucked really bad. 0 - 0.

Brazil didn't show much against Croatia which played very good football. Doesn't say anything really. Too early to tell... Brazil is still my tip. 1 - 0.

South Korea - Togo, 2 - 1, but who cares...

Tomorrow Germany plays against Poland. My tip is 1 - 1.

Then on Thursday, the game every peak oiler has been waiting for for years... Sweden - Paraguay. Sweden will beat the South 'Muricans with 2 - 0! Did you hear that Pee-Man?

Football is played on a field with ten yard demarcations. And to be honest, I don't care how many meters that works out to be. Futbol can sod off (unless we win, then I might get interested in that strange sport)

An interesting game, the Saudis already thought they won when two minutes into overtime the Tunisians made a goal...

I think Germany will win tonight, but it will be a very hard game, probably with a red card or two, because the Poles are with their backs against the wall...

Great game, 1-0 for Germany, but it could have easily been 4-0

The Germans played good and now already are partying like they have won the final, but I think they could be in for a rude shock once they meet one of the stronger teams...
