Just wondering what you think about the FIFA Soccer World Cup 2006 in Germany...

So who saw the first two games today?

The first game Germany vs. Costa Rica was great, very entertaining, the Germans were very offensive and rightly won, beautiful goals (I think it's also due to the new ball), but made some stupid stupid mistakes in the defense.
It's difficult to tell if they will come very far, but if they manage to tighten up the defense they could very well make it to the final.

Poland was very disappointing, I think they won't make it past the group phase...
Costa Rica and Ecuador were not bad, but somehow mediocre...

I saw both games today.

Germany did what they were supposed to do even without Ballack. Very good though! A little weak on the defensive side maybe, but what the hell! The goal from Frings was delicious... Germany may be back again... The World Cup really starts in the finals though...

Poland - Ecuador was like watching paint dry or grass grow. Poland really sucked. They had nothing! I've never seen a more boring game in my life.

I have a 3 - 1 win for Sweden bet against Trinidad - Tobago tomorrow...

Ljungberg, Larsson and Ibrahimovic! It smells like GOLD!!! It's not impossible...

Anyway, seriously... Brazil will win. Germany will take silver or bronze. Look out for France though... And Spain and Portugal... Or maybe Holland as a dark horse... I don't know...

All I care is that England doesn't win. Their fans are remarkably obnoxious considering that their team hasn't done squat in any competition since 66. If energy issues got half the press coverage Wayne Rooney's foot has received, people would take to the streets and demand their governments address the coming storm. The England squad is marketing and fluff distilled into a national football team.

I was born in england and moved to america when young.

the 'football' distinction has always befuddled me as well. clearly the worlds version is the correct one, not only in terms of consensus, but also from the simple virtue that it actually involves a FOOT for more than 1% of the game.

that being said I don't watch sports, especially mass media versions of them. like other artifacts of mass media popular sports just distract people from actually thinking about anything.

and thats not a reaction due to me being an american and therefore uninterested in soccer (haha!), I have the same opinion of superbowl sunday and the NBA.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, in the USA cares about NBA anymore. Same goes for NHL. Baseball and American football aren't going away anytime soon, although baseball is going through another round of performance-enhancing drug scandal.

I'd like to see the US television numbers for the WC compared to the last run of the Olympics. I don't think anyone cares about the Olympics any more either. Soccer has its niche here and as long as the organizers of US soccer don't try to push out baseball, American football, and NASCAR, it'll thrive.

one more thing to say, if sports are so great, go PLAY THEM. doesn't it strike you as even the slightest bit silly to be sitting on your ass watching other people exercise?

and as for NASCAR, with this illuminating activity it's not even a sport, or at least, it's only a sport in the same sense that Quake is. here we have people sitting on their asses, in a house or bar, watching other people sitting on their asses, in a car, driving in circles in a manner that is nearly indistinguishable from watching a highway. a highly celebrated form of conspicious consumption. whee!

I think it was a psychological problem of Sweden, they could clearly win this 5:0, but they didn't have the mental strength and will to win...

I think Trinidad is already the World Cup winner of hearts, like Cameroun some years ago...
