Yeah but you guys don't get it. Our entire economy is Dependant, heavily dependant, on the service industry. If that goes away, it all folds like a house of cards overnight. No one has any discresionary income, and that's a bankers worst nightmare. We are already waaay overextended over here. If we got a really hard push, it would all come flying down. I speak from the experence of one of the people who would be flying down. And I even made an effort to get out of debt. But some debts you can't get rid of without paying more than you have.

A bit off-topic.
On Sunday, I attended at a local car tuning show. Among many cars, I saw a Ford Explorer. I remembered along the lines, that there was a quote from an article about someone filling up a Ford Explorer and how expensive it was.

Wonderfull vehicle, I must admit. But for GOD's sake ... I can't see how someone can use that thing for personal transportation.

Look what I drive :


1.4L, 16 valve engine, slightly modified for performance.
It has front/read and side steel bars built in, for safety.

I was twice involved in an accident. I once got hit from the behind by a small bus, and once I was driving backwards in a dark parking lot and hit a jerk who left his car in the middle of nowhere.
On the second ocassions, the police officer asked (I quote ) :
"Son, are you f*cking around with me? You claim you have hit a vehicle. That vehicle is totally busted on the left side, and you claim that the 0.5 inch scratch on your rear bumper is the only damage you got? Are you sure you want to sign your statement?"

On the first ocassion, the bus had about 3 times more damage then I did.

It's a coupe. If I fold the rear seats, I can put a cow in my trunk.

I won't mention the mileage I get ... I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

It's not a solution to PeakOil, but it can curve the consumption curve enough to push peak oil in the future, and buy us time to think of a way out of it.

A collapse like that and soon would finally be enough to lower gas demand below supply levels and for a change oil prices will drop. Demand destruction like you describe would likely be larger than what is geologically necessary.

We haven't been below $3 for a long time. My wife was on a roadtrip with some friends to North Idaho and actually called me to tell me she found gas at $2.90. She sounded happy...... imagine if she had run into that price last year, I don't think it would have been a happy call.

I suppose that's the West coast for you... I think we're all over $3 now.... from San Ysidro, CA to Blaine, WA.

Been hovering around $2.85 here in NM... at least for regular. Most places are just this week moving over $3.

It was sobering when I was filling the tank of my small MG , the price was something like £1-04 per litre.

Thats about $7.30 (US Gallon) @ $1.86 : £1

Rather alarming when for the first time the "litres" counter was going up faster than the "£" counter.


So I can imagine it is equally disturbing for you guys across the pond in the colonies (lol) when your fuel goes over the $3 barrier.

Im glad I live not too far from work and shops and can keep the fuel bill down a bit but others arent so lucky I guess.

What do you figure the percentage increase has been there in England over the last couple years? We were at something like $1.70/gal a few years back so thats what? maybe %50-%70?
