The many alt-energy articles in the news.

Over the past 2 years there has been a plethora of articles written about alternative energy breakthroughs in major news outlets (AP, Reuters, NYT, CNN, Fox, etc). I bet there are upwards of 2-3 well-publicized articles on alternative energy every week. They all seem to have the same propaganda: "we are getting close to a breakthrough", "ethanol can reduce oil dependence by <put bullsh*t # here> percent", "can be made for cheaper than $30 barrel", "is growing by 10% by 2012", "<Country> aims to be energy independent by <year>".

As the peak oil aware, what do we make of these? Frankly, I think they are all propaganda written to soothe the hearts and minds of the vast number of simpletons that occupy our planet. I love reading some of the posts on Yahoo when these articles come out--people are truly unaware and will latch onto anything. It's always the "liberals", or the "cons", or the "government won't allow anything but oil".

I have nothing against research institutions--after all, many things we enjoy today have come from delusional whack-jobs in a lab. However, reality exists on the other hand. And some of these problems have been worked on for 40+ years with no viable solution in place. I have met a few scientific lab jockeys in time, and these guys are truly unphased by anything that doesn't fit in their brilliant--but microscopic and close-minded--view. They are not disturbed by terms like "peak oil", so long as the government is flipping the millions of dollars a year to keep them employed by their research institution.

Today on Yahoo I read an article discussing some more things about alt energy:

What do you guys make of these articles? Like I mentioned above, there seems to be a lot more of these coming the past 2 years than I remember beforehand.

I couldn't possibly agree more.

I hear scientist talk about how the general population in the US has become a little on the anti-scientist side. I often have a hard time believing that as all of our next great positive changes will happen because of them. Then I see posts like this.

For your information the alternative energy is what will keep our nation going. Those close minded people are the ones that will make it work. After all some of our best conviences in life are based off of work that was started more than 200 years ago. And in 200 years from now they will be able to say the thing so long as we continue to support those scientists.

That's a grossly offensive statement. You obviously DO have something against research institutions. You are almost certainly alive today because these 'whack-jobs' created a world in which you can survive. You owe them your life. Some gratitude, understanding and recognition wouldn't go amiss.

There are two possibilities:
1) billions of people die and the world falls back about 200 years in the level of its development
2) these people find a way of preventing it.

A thousand years ago there were those who were actively looking forward to armageddon and the destruction of the world. They thought that they were the chosen ones, that they would be taken up in the rapture to a pastoral and serene life, whilst the sinners perished.

Thankfully the world we benefit from was built by those that focused on fixing problems here, not holding up their hands and saying 'I'm chosen, you can die'.

Stop decrying the efforts people are putting into making alternative fuels a reality and start praying that one or more comes off and saves your skin; again.
