Over the past 2 years there has been a plethora of articles written about alternative energy breakthroughs in major news outlets (AP, Reuters, NYT, CNN, Fox, etc). I bet there are upwards of 2-3 well-publicized articles on alternative energy every week. They all seem to have the same propaganda: "we are getting close to a breakthrough", "ethanol can reduce oil dependence by <put bullsh*t # here> percent", "can be made for cheaper than $30 barrel", "is growing by 10% by 2012", "<Country> aims to be energy independent by <year>".
As the peak oil aware, what do we make of these? Frankly, I think they are all propaganda written to soothe the hearts and minds of the vast number of simpletons that occupy our planet. I love reading some of the posts on Yahoo when these articles come out--people are truly unaware and will latch onto anything. It's always the "liberals", or the "cons", or the "government won't allow anything but oil".
I have nothing against research institutions--after all, many things we enjoy today have come from delusional whack-jobs in a lab. However, reality exists on the other hand. And some of these problems have been worked on for 40+ years with no viable solution in place. I have met a few scientific lab jockeys in time, and these guys are truly unphased by anything that doesn't fit in their brilliant--but microscopic and close-minded--view. They are not disturbed by terms like "peak oil", so long as the government is flipping the millions of dollars a year to keep them employed by their research institution.
Today on Yahoo I read an article discussing some more things about alt energy:

What do you guys make of these articles? Like I mentioned above, there seems to be a lot more of these coming the past 2 years than I remember beforehand.
