Boinc Again

Hey everyone, been putting this off for a while, but finally got around to making PO teams for all the established Boinc projects

So for those of you boincing out there signup for the PO group (currently the group only has 6 members, but is placed above 95% of all groups).

For those of you not one boinc, have a look around at the various projects, I'm sure you'll find something of interest.

I've listed each of the projects below with an rough indicator of the scale of crunching for the project, so it your a boinc nuts'o like me, becarefull not to overload your computers so they don't finish before the deadline (A 1X project takes between 1 and 2 hours on my 2.5GHz computer)

Xtremlab (0X)
Study of distributed processing itself
New members sign up......Current members sign up

Protien Predictor (1X)
Predicting protein structure from protein sequence
New Members......Current Members

LHC at Home (1X)
Cern particle accelerator research and modeling (not always active)
New Members......Current members

Simap (1X)
Creating a public database of protein similarities
New Members......Current members

Seti At Home (4X)
Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (the ones who started this whole distributed processing thing)
New Members......Current Members

World Community Grid (4X)
General Humantitarian Research (currently focusing on aids)
Current Members (New members must sign up first)

Rosetta at Home (5X)
Protein modelling for disease research
New Members......Current members

uFluids (6X)
Modelling flow in microgravity (satellites, Mems/Nano machines)
New Members......Current Members

Einstein at Home (8X)
Search for Neutron stars (proving Gravitational waves)
New Members......Current members

the following projects are only for those running the computer 24/7, or have a very high end computer

Cimate Prediction (720X)
Global warming climate modeling
New Members......Current members

Seasonal Attribution Project (640X)
Local weather modeling and research
New Members......Current Members

BBC Climate Change (700X)
Alternate Global warming model (Spin off of Cimate Prediction)
New Members......Current members

if there is any project you'd like me to add, let me know (although project should at least be in the Beta stage)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'B')oinc (Big Ongoing Integrated Neural Computer.) is a project to integrate many distributed nerds . . ah, I mean nodes into one giant weenie fest so that all the members can get action at the same time. Hope that helps :-D

Surprisingly close, but for those that don't know BOINC (Berkly Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is a distributed computing network where the people that sign up run a portion of a very complex problem on their computer. The program only runs during the "idle" time of your CPU so it does not take away any processing power from anything you are doing (I'm currently running 12 projects with out a hitch).

Is it important? Well that depends on your perspective, and the projects you run. All in all, most of the research being done is valid, the screen savers are interesting, and its a harmless diversion from the drudgery we come accross here.
