The other thing not mentioned in the article that's different between now and the last crisis, is that in the Late 70's/early 80's it was still hard to get credit.
Now if people feel a bit of a price pitch, they just sign up for a new XYZ card, get a new/expanded line of credit, or the new "classic", refi the house (I get pre-approved letters for these about once per week).
However with:
house prices starting to decline
regulators cracking down on "no doc" loans
increased credit card minimums
rising interest rates for all those ARM holders,

SUV sales will soon hit a wall (as will pretty much all car sales)
The other thing is the time scale is off. We're only 6 months into high gas prices. Give us another 18 months of this and the average 30 something'er will be flopping on the side of road like a dying fish.

btw, the trend I've noticed in my town is a growing number of sub-compact hatchbacks, like the mazda 3, Aveo, Matrix, Focus etc...
So at least some people are getting it
(although I still see a lot of new big ass SUVs and trucks out there)

Wow what a response from my first posted topic thread Ive been on the site for quite some time lingering around but I am very impressed at the knowledge of people on the site. For example I read all of the thread on "Michael Lynch - Disputing Peak Oil". Needless to say I got a good idea of the situation and the polarity of the people involved in the debate. I myself bought a civic hybrid in 2002 and I have been taughting peak oil for years but it wasnt until recently till i fell upon this website. Excellent job,

Let's say I'm crossing the street and (after I'm out of his way) I just flip off some guy driving a Hummer and say "thanks for supporting Al-Qaeda, asshole!!!" or something along those lines.
Are we at the point in the collapse where other people will:
A) not only understand this but
B) more or less approve of such action?
I was waiting at the bus and a Hummer drove by. Thought about just silently flipping the guy the bird just for kicks and was wandering if the other people in the street would understand or if they would wonder who the weirdo with the anger management problem is.
What do you guys think?
Note that I don't blame Hummer drivers for our predicament. I understand it's much more complicated than that. Nonetheless, I sort of like the idea of shaming them as they drive around.

Remember that people owning Hummers and other SUV/large truck type personal transportation vehicles generally suffer from gluttony and one should interact with them as one would with anyone with a serious personality disorder.

People suffering from gluttony typically have a sociopathic disregard for others and are potentially dangerous and should not be provoked. Any positive corrective action taken by anyone against their personal transportation vehicles is a rational and proper activity, as most would agree, and certainly to be applauded.

However for your personal safety it should be conducted when nobody is looking. Happy hunting.
